When do you start planting a garden? We want to plant potatoes, green beans, sweet corn, green peppers, onions, we live in northern Missouri. Any help would be appreciated.

Fyi There is an Anderson Farm Market here in NY. For years they did just what you are looking to do. They put potatoes in around 40 or so acers. Now the son runs the market and dad is retired. Just thought you would like to know some other Andersons.

Get a soil thermometer. Most of them will have the germination temp for various plants and the others can be found on the web somewhere.

wonn't be able to get the thing through the ice here (NW Wisc) for another week or so and almost another month to being able to plant radish, brocholi, carrots, and the other stuff that germinates at 40F.

You guys are so lucky to be able to even tink about planting now.

Here in Michigan the ground is still frozen and covered in snow.

Now is the time to plant potatoes and onions as a freeze will not hurt them I have planted onions and potatoes mar 1st and have had good crops, the rest you need to wait until until danger of killing frost has passed good luck . I planted these 2 weeks ago and I live near Spfld IL.

Try your local state extension service. I did a quick search and came up with the following: >Link

The>Link University of Massachusetts also has an excellent website for home gardening but you may have to adjust the info for your local climate.

reminds me of the story of a woman who wrote her husban in prison asking when it was time to plant and where to plant her garden, his reply was "not time yet, and what ever you do don't dig in the back yard. A few days later federal agents showed up at the woman's house, doug up the back yard. The wife sent another letter to her husban and told of what happened.. he replied.. now it is time to plant, and where..the back yard

Can we get the joke right? The original line should be 'don't dig in the back yard, that's where I buried the machine guns'. The original is from St. Patrick's day/IRA joke about planting potatoes after troops dig up garden looking for Provo guns. Some people stomp all over punchlines or don't get the straight lines right- oh well nice try.
