Reading post concerning what size plow to use with a 4020 yesterday made me think of a question.First here's my situation.I have a 1961 J.D.3010 tractor that is in reasonably good condition, runs good, starts in cold weather[30 degrees F.without starting aids].I bought a 5-18 I.H.plow from a sugar cane farmer out of Baton Rouge,L.A. for $50.00.Took 2 of the bottoms off and welded a three point frame onto it.Pulled it around for a while, finally got it adjusted,[I've never plowed before],and it seems to roll the dirt over pretty well. Here's my question;would converting this plow to semi-mounted be better i.e.easier on the tractor, makeit possible to add another bottom etc..My soil is classed as sandy clay buy the extension service by the way. Thanks in advance..Kenny

I would consider selling what you have and starting over. A pull-type plow will generally give you a more uniform plowing job, but pulls harder because it is a dead pull. A semi mount gives some weight transfer to the tractor and still maintains a pretty uniform depth. A mounted plow gives total weight transfer, but the poorest maintenance of uniform and proper depth. To switch over to a homemade semi-mount what you've already cobbled up with the mounting is going to give you something with zilch trade value. A 3010 should handle a 4 bottom plow in most conditions, a 3 bottom in the worst. If you need trash clearance like in heavy cornstalks, go with a 3-18 inch instead of a 4-16.

I suppose you could convert it to a semi-mount; most things are possible given enough time and money. It would be a major undertaking (where are you gonna get the tail wheel assembly? If that's what you want, why not buy a semi-mount. Our first JD was a 3010 diesel, bought new in '63; it handled a 4-bottom quite well, IN OUR SOIL. I've used most kinds, pull type, 3-point hitch, semi-mount, and even followed a mule with a turning plow a little; in my opinion, the semi-mount is head and shoulders above the others.....

How many HP is 3010 and how much does it weight?

Does it have cat 1 or cat 2 hitch?

I think the first 3020s were about 63 pto hp, the later (68?) had 70. 3010 probably came in at about 55-60 pto about 1963 or so.
