I plant oats and clover in the fall for my deer food plots.
This year, I want to plant something in the spring also, and am thinking along the lines of pinto beans/black eyed peas, because they"re fairly cheap, and they"re also fairly tolerant to the Texas heat. Problem is, I broadcast oats and clover---- has anyone tried broadcasting beans/peas? Will it work, or am I wasting my time?
Don"t care how it "looks"---wondering if it will work like the oats and clover.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Check with biologic seeds they should have a custom mix for your area.

I broadcast blackeye peas for a summer plot it works good just disc and drag cover them.I also do the same in the fall just mix them with your oats. You will be surprised but the deer will eat the peas first. Bill W.

1945 A, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just need to cover the seed with a little dirt, and roll it and order a rain.

If I remeber right, you said you were in Lee Co.
I'm in Bastrop Co.

Howdy Neighbor!
You're right, my place is in Lee County. Feeding deer is how I keep my ag. exemption. The problem with oats and clover is, that they "go away" just when the deer are needing extra nutrition in the summer.
If I can show I'm providing supplemental food in the summer as well, the tax man is happier, not to mention the deer!
I was planning to do the beans/peas as I do the oats and clover. I disc the area pretty good, broadcast seed and feritlizer, then drag the area, covering as best I can, and hope for rain. This method usually works in the fall, but getting a rain in the summer is a real challenge sometimes.
Thanks for the reply!
