About to tackle planting my first forage nurse crop. Have had job custom done before. Lots of different methods of tillage observed, square, on angles, 90 degree cross cuts. Which is best or does it matter.

did you ask elvis how he came up with all those catchy songs? :<) It depends; how good a seedbed do you need, how big is your equip. once over plowed ground with a 12' transport disc is good enough if the ground was fall broke, currently mellow, and not much weed pressure, and you don't need a fine seedbed. Spring broke, wet, rough sod on clay, I've worked it until the tires were glowing and didn't accomplish a thing except to burn a lot of fuel. Cross cutting will even out a rough plow job some, running with the furrows you can stay on the tractor just got to see what works best for YOU.

Mostly, the lay of the ;land is most important whenits all said and done. You got to lay your furrows wheather made with a plow or disc so as to cause barriers against drainage. How you plow, disc, and plant will have alot to do with wheather you keep your land ditvch free or not. I came here to okla and plowed in the 4 square like my dad, grandad, great grandad did. and the land nearly washed away. Now I plow and disc at right angles of where the rain water will come from. This creates little ponds in a few places that hold water, but it also holds the ground, so I live with it. But, Im going to get a 40ft 4X12 C iron, weld hooks on it and pull it across my fields both ways to both even ot the field of dips and to build small tarriaces
