Last year I planted 40 acres of loblolly pine seedlings in Alabama in what was formerly pasture land. I try to keep the lanes between the pine rows bush hogged to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture. As a weekend farmer, the grass and weeds grow faster than I can keep them cut. Are there any suggestions to keep the rows clear of grass and weeds other than bushhogging? Could I till the lanes between the rows or would that turn into a lanes of mud?

I have seen some farms till and plant a type of grass that grows a thick low mat lawn. They plant the Grass first Mow for a year and Round Up Weed KIller the row area twice. Third year they plant the tree seedlings in the Rows devoid of vegetation and have a nice thick mat of grass with no weeds. Since trees take a while to mature the extra pre-time is worth it. It looks great when it is done.

ewk AL, A buddy of mine has a tree farm here in central Texas. He uses "Roundup" and sprays in between his rows. Just follow the directions.
Good Luck,

I would say 2 or maybe 3 times a year until the trees grow big enough to shade out the weeds and grass.

My experience is that there is no need cut between the trees. Just keep an eye on the growth of the trees and in 3 to 4 years they will be growing above the other vegetation. You may want to confirm this with your local forestry people.
