Millett Harvest Question

This year I am breaking up an old, run out hay field and plan to seed it with timothy, alsike and red clover for next year and a cover crop for this year.

The question is: has anyone planted millett as a cover crop but mowed it as hay before it matures? (I could plant oats as the cover but I need the hay.)

don't feed that hay to horses if it has alsike in it. Millet I think would be hard to dry and bale, kind of stalky. We have a related crop called Sudex here that is used for green-chop for cows, sometimes also put in the silo. Millet is a lot shorter than Sudex, but I'd still wonder if it would choke out some of your new seeding. Why not plant a variey of forage oats and cut them for hay?

Thanks Tim, I was wondering if the millett would choke out next year's grass. I think I may try and make hay out of the oats. Mark
