I have 10 acres in Minnesota and I'd like to seed 5 with grass hay and 5 with oats. The previous owner had soybeans last year, but no tilling has been done since harvest. The soil is sandy clay. I have an old van-brundt drill. Should I disc or drag the field first, or can I just go over it with the drill. Does the seed need to be packed afterwards? How about fertilizer? When and how is the best way to apply it? I don't have much for equipment, but there're always auctions around. Thanks, Brand New

work the ground pretty good, and plant the oats as a cover crop to the grass/hay.

I would disc the field and then plant it. I don't think the drill will put the seed in very well without working the ground up first. Packing is optional, it will give a smoother field and is said to increase germination, but it will work without it.

By the way, everything will be pulled by a farmall 460.
