Guys, for the past week I have been in and out of two sickle mowers. I've lost enough hardware in the hayfield that I just went ahead and bought extra sections for the inevitable.

I need a pull type sickle. Its going to have to do about 50 acres 3 times a year. No hydraulic hookups, none of my tractors have the hookup. I need one in pretty good shape.
Three days of cutting and 10 acres of hay!!!! ARRRGHHHHH!!

Let me know if any of y'all got one.

Thanks,

Brad

KEH,

Thanks for the advice. Well after alot of thought and prayer, I'm dipping into what little savings I got and buying one of them disc mowers. Its about got my stomach all tore up. I'll take your advice and get new.
I'm not sure wheter to get a drum or disc. Them drums sure are cheaper, but there is a JD dealer in town where I could get part easy. Still mulling it over. Better hurry though, I gotta buy one tomorrow :)

Thanks again,

Brad Bachelor

James,

That cultivator Hook is exactly the same that I had on the old A.

Batchelor.

If you decide to get a disc mower be very careful about used ones. See it run first. The B is not suitable for a disc mower. The 5203 should handle up to a 7 ft. 10 in. model. It would cut hay several times faster than what you have.

Guys, that helps a ton.

That #5 looks like the ol IH25v mower I've been using for years. This year the trip blade mechanism gave up the ghost, so I went to the trailer mower (NI 30 I think). Then it started gagging all over it self which is where I'm at today.

Right now I have a 3 pt I built for the B, but I could easily convert it for the lift if need be. I do appreciate the help.

The funny thing is that ol NI#30 has made only two trips around the field, but it is the cleanest cutting mower I've ever had. Then things started going wrong. Its almost like the Good Lord is teasing me with this thing. I'm off tonight to see if I can fix it one more time. If not, It may be time for a good running #5. (Or one of them fancy disc mowers and make the wife work two jobs again :) )

Thanks a bunch and keep them ideas coming

Yeah, but my cows don't know that.... Neither does my wallet. :)

I've got three tractors on three different pastures. I need a mower that I can trailer between the three. two of my tractors are 50 some years old (Farmall SC, and a JDB). The third is two years old. Now I could float the big tractor between all three, but then I'd have to backtrack for baling. So I would like to be able to use each tractor for cutting and raking, then the big one for baling.

Father in law gave me a hard time about buying the "Big" (5203) tractor for baling. Says alls he used was the ol B for 20 years on his quarter section dairy and I had to get all fancy and upgrade..... Now I'm getting it from the other end :).

Thanks for the advice. Someday maybe this raggely ol farm will get another "Big" tractor.

Thanks again,

Brad

Is FIL still driving his flathead 47 Ford? Does he have a micro wave oven? Does he watch TV, Videos? Pull the plug on them as they didn't have them when he was farming with his B. Does he have a MR Coffee? Pull that too. Yank hhis internet , Cds and dvds. Toss his digital camera. You get the idea. Anything thast wasn't around in 1950 he shouldn't be using. He should be proud of you for doing well. Don't worry about that nasty old far#

What kind of tractor are you using. It sounds to me that you are planning on putting up somewhere near 200 tons of hay. And you are using a tractor with no three point and no hydraulics. Get a better tractor, then you can get a decent mower, like a Rouse,or an IH 1100. You're producing 20,000 dollars worth of hay.

Pull type sickle mowers are fairly rare. New Idea made one a long time ago that had the blade raised by a mechanical trip. New Holland also made a trail type mower, probably needed a hydraulic cylinder. For the JD b I would recommend getting a mounted mower like a JD no 5 or preferrably later JD and leave it with the tractor. Refer to James Howell's posts somewhere on YTMAG forums showing nicely restored JD tractor and JD mower. He made a foot lift which is neat, but on his tractor there is a mechanical or possibly hydraulic cultivator lift under the seat. I had a JD A with hydraulic cultivator lift and bought one JD cultivator lift arm, fastened it to one side of the lift, and ran a chain from it to the lift arm on an IH semi mounted mower. It worked fine to lift the sickle bar enough for turning. If your JD b has the mechanical lift it should work for that. Don't know about the IH sc, but it seems to me with no hydraulics you are going to be getting off the tractor anyway to hand raise the blade, so you may as well get a mounted mower which is more likely to be availiable and possibly cheaper. Hope this helps. Or you could sell the old tractors and get a small 3ph tractor with 3ph mower and trailer it from field to field.

Thanks KEH for the compliment on my tractors and mowers.

The two foot lifts are both OEM John Deere; somewhat rare but can still be found.

You are correct that the pull-type mowers with two wheels are 'scarce'.

The #5 works best for me in my small operation. The knife, sections, guards, knife clips, wear plates, pitman, and plow bolt fasteners are available at TSC.

I also have a JD 39N sickle mower that is a 3point mower that is a backup.

I would recommend to The Bachelor to set up the JD B with a #5 mower and use it exclusively as the mowing tractor.

If the hydraulics work on the B, take a look at the setup below that was on my 43B.

I was told it is a cultivator hook. One of the previous owners used a chain from this hook to 'lift' the cutter bar.

I would suggest that the Farmall Super C be used to pull the rake. I spent many hours as a kid on my dad's Farmall Super C mowing the same pastures I do today.

I will use several different tractors to rake hay.

I would recommend to The Bachelor to use your "Big"(5203) tractor for baling.

Don't know the horsepower requirements of your baler, but since you bought the 5203 for baling, use it for baling and spare the Super C and JD B the 'heavier' work.

'Big John' our 55 Model 70 diesel runs the Krone 260 baler with little or no effort.

Good luck with your hay operation. Hope this helps.
