My father in law and I ahve been having an argument on the right time to cut brome for good hay. I say it is just as it is heading out and he says not until dough stage. What are your thoughts? Everything I have read says just as it is heading out but is old country custom right? Thank you!!

I start cutting any of the grasses once they have fully headed out and are pollinating but that is only because that is about the time it is dry enough here in Michigan to get those cool season grasses to cure. I looked up values for brome in a book I have and it states that smooth brome can be up to 15% protien but does not state if that is in the boot or flowering. One thing about brome is that the basal leaves sure stay green for ever even into fall. I baled first cut brome last year on Novemeber 4th, fall rains made second cut leaves come up and greened the field up.

I don't know what the "dough" stage is.Here in SD we cut just when it starts to "dust". That's headed out and if you hit it with your arm it "Dusts". SOmetime in late July.
