There are 1.9 million farmers in this country, of those less thasn 400,000 provide most of the farm production for this country & export. There needs to be some balance on production, there are very many people depending on our production to meet demand. Food takes a year to produce, and depends on the weather, and what we decide to plant in spring, will be what we get in fall, to eat for the next year. A lot of things can go wrong with this if 400,000 people decide individually and near a billion people are depending on the results. I beleive in free eneterprize, but if you look at the big picture, I think we are better off spending less than 10% of our income on food, and 1% of our income on govt programs that keep food production smooth & orderly and somewhat oversupplied. Rather than living in the countries that spend 40%+ of their income on food, and depend on handouts from other countries to make up the shortages. (But this is true freedom!) The 3rd alternative is to have the govt tell us exactly what to do, which is what USSR used to do (they ain't around any more) or China is doing (they are importing more & more; used to export...) I think govt incentives are better than govt mandates..... If you think on that a long time, which way is the better system, better for all? No plan, a guiding hand, or total govt mandate? Your pride is very cool, but not sure it gets you what you really want in the long run for all people? What should the goal be - no govt involvement and hungry people? I think that would be harmful, & perhaps not such a good goal..... I say this gently - there are many ways to look at it, and on different days I am on different sides of the issue, so want to be clear - I'm not saying you are wrong. But your view is rather ridgid, and may leave some people out of the loop? Farm a couple acres for your own use, and you have no concern of others. Farm enough land to sell stuff, and you have to look at the big picture some. At least you get to choose, so you could do exactly what you want to do. The other 2 systems of farming, there are many people with no choice. I think our system worked for you, even if it might not look like it? --->Paul
