Howdy all...my wife made me get a tractor ( cool wife huh ?) and is turning me into a farmer, soooo she gets me an 8n, 48 model...I have about 150X150 feet area were going to turn into a veggie garden...the area has trees, but the trees and stumps will be removed this week...I am getting different ideas on disking and plowing, some folks say you dont need to plow, just use the disk to break up the ground, I am in Georgia, we have clay with some top soil mix, this area now has very tall pines and some decent top soil then a layer of clay under it.....I would like some thoughts from you guys that been farming awhile.

Thanks

Ron

best advice I can give you is when that bulldozer or whatever comes to grub out roots, get him to do some tillage for you i.e. use the root rake to stir the soil. I don't know where you are at, but I know in south GA our land is notorious for having compaction issues. If it was me, I would harrow as deep as possible to cut and drag up any roots, then deep plow, and come back with the harrow.

Bu your word (harrow), I pretty much know you mean disc, but he might not, An old JD book I have says youll have better crops if you disc first and then plow and then disc again, If your plowing 4in or so I cant see what the first discing did for you, but thats what they say. Id rather double disc after plowing. Anorher thing. First he saays his wife made him get a tractor, then he says hes got a Ford 8N, NOW which is it, Id she was a WAY cool wife, yioud be bragging abouot a AC WD45, or Farmall C H , or JD B, or so on/ THOSE ARE TRACTORS They dont call Ford (fix or repair daily) for nothing
