My county extension agent told me he has had a lot of success using a conventional grain drill to overseed clover and alfalfa in existing pasture. I have a Case IH 510 drill and I am debating on using it instead of broadcasting clover and alfalfa this spring.
Is this something that a lot of people do? I think the biggest limitation is going to be keeping the seed shallow enough. It seems to me though I will get better soil contact with the drill. Any suggestions.

I gave it a try today and everything seemed to work good. Occasionaly grass would plug up a seed chute but overall I think it was a success. Just like you said getting the seed to deep wasn't an issue.

Never tried it,but I suppose if it's grazed right down short and there's plenty of moisture so you get some penetration it'd be OK. I wouldn't worry about getting it too deep.

Before I took my 8300 JD drill to the sale 3 years ago, I had two bags of oats left. It was pretty early spring before the green up and those oats had the best stand I ever had!
Horses kept them chewed down to the nub so I'm sure they liked them.
