And ive grown Reids probably off and on for 30 yrs. With another 10 years in hybred corn. Ive never got a fracton of the yields in OP corn. Yes the stalk is twice as tall, but that seems bait for wind, and if you van grow 2 hybred 6ft stalks in the place of one 12ft Op stalk, what have you gained. True, you can save your own seed, and thereb y , in my casem with the above prices, save $3,40, But, at $114 a bu Hybred, and that being near $500, I can have at least twice the yeild in a bad year as I can have with OP in the best year of my life. Why did I stay with Op so long if these are my thoughts?? Well, I always liked the price, and I thought IO could make yields where others couldnt. Then i realized, if I planted 8 acres of my 12 in OP vorn and 4 in oats, Then, if I planted 3 in Hybred and planted 3 in Hyubred corn, id have the same yield, but I would have twice the acreage in oats. I kinda hate it, but thats how I see it.

I have an uncle who still plants around 50 percent OP. He plants all end rows, and small fields surrounded by woods. He lives for rotation, and can't see wasting money on hybred when it it just used to feed the critters.

Some grow OP for silage yet on a bigger scale, it can yield pretty good cattle/dairy feed for the cost.
