Wife: (sniff..) All our kids are gone...Me: Who's gonna hay?

Howdy,
Need some help here. I put up about 2000 small squares a year for the cows. For some reason the kids have grown and are about to leave the house and the farm is not big enough to hire help.I like squares because I can store them in what I've got and I can't produce enough hay for 20 or 30% waste I'd have by storing the rounds outside.
Anyway, I'm looking for help on inexpensive ways I can get the hay by myself. I've thought about that hay basket thing. Anyone had any luck with that? I'm thinking accumulators are too expensive and may need too much horsepower (my biggest tractor puts out 55 hp at the drawbar).
Thanks for any and all suggestions,
Brad

Thanks again. This haybasket is looking more and more promising.

One more question....

How do you handle hills and turns. Do you have to rake your windrows in straight lines and shut the baler down on the corners?

No and No. If you have it set right and hooked up correctly you just bale. 80 90 bales self load,150 if you stack them inside basket. give me shout or call 319-257-6764 shop. you will also need special short hitch pin and let you know the other tricks.

Well Right now I have three barns. One has a haymow, the other two are shed types. One of the sheds isn't high enough for a wagon, the other I built and is. Right now the one I built holds 1500 bales, the other 500, and the haymow about 400. Thanks for your advice.

I'm growing fescue and clover here. I'll tell you haying can sure suck you in. My baling was looking pretty good to the bottom line when I had the ol free Ford 532 going. After it broke and I couldn't find the part for it anywhere (and being chased off porches by curr dogs when I went to ask about parts balers), I got so frustrated I bought a new one. Now the ol bottom line isn't looking so good..... You can buy alot of hay for the price of a new baler.

Been there done that also. Kids grown gone which am thankful for so they have ther own lives. Grew up behind thrower balers. Ran the bale baskets units (3) for 10 -12 seasons loved them. Now run accumulator setup, and 12 donahue trailers for hauling. If you are wanting to use existing storage probably baskets would be best bet. Can you acces barn with tractor grapple Can you access with wagons
these what you need to know for I can help you. But my geuss is you have probably the haymow type storage access by elevator,if thats the case basket wagon best bet, or like some one else mention hire a driver for couple days thats cheapest option by far.

Well Thanks all again. For something my size, the hay basket might be right up my alley. I'm gonna look into it.

Hayray- The wagon hitch on your baler.... Did you make it yourself?? MF is pretty proud of those things. If so, I'd sure like to pick your brain.

Thanks again,

Brad

No, that is the factory hitch, all as I did was cut it down a bit to make it shorter so that the bale basket chute rides closer to the baler. Although, if you wanted to make your own it sure would be easy. Mine is just a I think a 3 or 4", 1/4" or 1/8" thick walled pipe that inserts into another tube and slides in and out. I had trouble drilling another hole straight thru the hitch pipe, ended up crooked.

I use an accumulator and grapple. Have to look around but find an old Farmhand unit. Some were ground skid and some trailer and hydralic. Ones I found needed work but I have less than $2000. in them. Many of the new ones look like copies. Especially the grapples. Good luck

a friend of mine has used a bale basket for several years. his dad runs baler brings baler and basket to barn dumps and back to field. fields are close to barn. when scott has time he will put bales away. scott will be either using round baler or cutting more hay.

You may have to rethink your whole setup for the future.

I have been doing the equivalent of 10,000 little square bales a year by myself for over 15 years.

But I bale it in large rounds and put them in the barn. No waste.

If your hay storage is on the ground in the barn and not in a loft you may want to consider stacking large rounds in the barn.

You can't justify a round bale with your numbers so you would hire the baling done.

Or just buy more wagons so you can unload the little squares when you want. Then all you need is a driver for the baler to pull you around on the rack.

I don't know what baler you are using, but I bale with an Oliver 720 and pull an 8 bale accumulator with my Oliver 770 that don't put out 55 HP on it's best day.
A decent used drag accumulator/grapple can be had for around $5000.00-$6000.00. Works good for me.

Yep! If you find one used, the hitch should come with it. Just 2 pieces of 3"x 18'X 3/16" and a square bar connected under the bale chamber. On mine the squar bar is about 2' longer so there is one hitch in the middle of the bale chamber and one offset so you can pull the accumulator in a straight line when traveling.

I bale with a Hesston in-line and bale baskets, no modifications necessary, the side pick-up conventionals require a special add on hitch.

HayRay, that is one neat photo! I like the tractor and the baler. Got a friend here that uses an 1850 with His Hesston baler, and loves it.
I'd go there, but going on 66, i'm looking to do less, not more!

The bale basket would be the cheapest investment of the whole deal, now those are around $3700, they were 2700 years ago when I bought mine. The baler ends up costing a solid $20,000. You make your money back fast on the basket without having to pay labor.

I've been running hay baskets for about 15 or 16 years. (Yikes! didn't realize it has been that long until I started thinking about it just now)Wouldn't be without them. Mine are Pro Quality, built in St.Cloud, MN (now out of business), but I've heard only positive about EZ Trail's baskets, too. Can't get me to use a kicker baler/wagon either. If your tractor is big enough to pull a wagon behind the baler, it can handle a basket behind the baler.

My freind had the same issue. He slowly aquired 18 thrower racks and now just bales the hay, puts them in the shed till someone can unload them, or feeds off the wagon.
