Planting a new patch of #1 quality Alfalfa in a previously corn, wheat, soybean rotation field. Hay will be sold. Leafhoppers are a common problem here in SW Indiana. Our one and only local crop service charges extra to clean out their rigs to spray insecticide only.

Leafhopper resistant variety is about $15 more per bag than non-resistant. Anyone have experience with Leafhopper resistant varieties? Local neighboring Dairyfarmer has used a 60/40 mix with some success.

I conduct the Iowa Forage Variety Tests. Check out the leafhopper resistant trials in the link below. You usually see up to 1 ton/a. advantange over susceptable checks. The new resistant varieties, are definatly worth planting in your area.

I have used it and can tell a yeild advantage where the risitant alfalfa was planted.

But it is resisant not a cure all to feafhoppers.

Is it worth the 15 dollars.

I would use it again.

Gary
