Does anyone know of a good soil test kit that can be purchased that is simple to use and can be used multiple times.Tractor Supply has one time PH kit for around $5.00, but I want to do more than one test.

My dad has a meter that will test the PH. It has two prongs that you stick in the ground and then you just wait a couple minutes and read what is says. Now that, that is said I don't know where he got it and I know he will not remember either. Check with some of the bigger seed companys and one of them will most likely have one

Those type of PH meters came out about 30 years ago. First one I bought had one thick probe with one plate one the bottom and one on the side. The less expensive ones have two prongs now days. You can also get a moisture meter that looks the same and a combination meter that messures both PH and moisture content. I forget who makes them but I could look when Im at work.

How accurate they are tho? I dont know that answer. They dont messure NPK or any of the trace elements.

Dave:
I don't know where you are but here in TN we have a Farmers Cooperative (Co-op). They don't charge anything for a sample if you purchase fertilizer from them. Check your local fertilizer seller and see if they offer the same...
The tests are conducted by a local university.

It would be easier and more accurate for you to collect soil samples and send them to an accredited soil testing lab!! The analysis report would not only give you the nutrient profile of the soil, but also fertilizer recommendations for the crops you plan to raise on the soils.

Your local County Extension Office or Fertilizer Dealer can help you with collecting the soil samples.

I've used LaMotte kits when I taught biology. They were good, and pretty accurate. Order them from NASCO, or any of the science teaching supply catalogs. Cost was more than at the Extension office and they are calibrated to your local recommendations so for class I used them, when Im buying the fertilizer I used the county agent.

Check with the local extension agency. Here in FLA it is $3.00 for basic and $7.00 for full analysis.

It is $$ well spent instead of guessing what to add and wasting lots of $$.

Most nurseries carry inexpensive test kits that will allow you to do a few tests with the same kit. You get what you pay for tho and I just never trusted those inexpensive test kits.

I know several years ago I use to send tests off to Texas A & M. You might check with your county agent and see if he knows where you can send off for a test if you want a real accurate test. Back then the test was only $2.00 and they provided the test bag to send the dirt in.
