Have a new fall seeding of timothy that has come up nicely. Has a lot of broad leaf weeds close to the ground also comming nicely. What would be the best to kill the weeds and not hurt the timothy? Had it sprayed last summer before plowing. A lot of weed seed must have been turned up when I plowed it.

I normally spray my pure stands with a quart per acre of 2,4-D (low volatile esther) every other year plus 80/20 surfactant. The 2,4-D was less than $60 for 2-1/2 gallons. Usually hit it the last of Feb.

My main problems in timothy are wild mustard and henbit. It also gets Canadian thistle. I've got a real problem with fleabane in a couple of fields but I've got to spray in April to get it. I hate to get in a field once the timothy starts growing so I try to plan them in early varieties, like Clair, and cut early.

I've got the mustard problem, yellow rocket. I tried 2,4,-db last year on a timothy/redclover but waited too long before I got to it. I know the stuff starts growing around that time so I will be on top of it this year.

I have similar new 2 acre field of tim/orchard grass. I know from experience no one will come spray field that small. So I learned to go to local coop and rent small spray used by rural land owners to fertilize/weed the big lawns. Sprayer has small B&S engine and 10 width of spray with 60 gal tank. I buy either 2-4D in 2 1/2 gallon containers or Weed-B-Gone concentrate. Pull with my zero turn lawnmower (SCAG) because my Ford 600 is just too big to turn quickly. Done this on a number of small acres converting to new grass hay fields. I have two to do next spring. Knocks down the early giant ragweed and bull thistle problems so the grass can shade out the new weed seedlings.

I'd read your states agronomy guide. Ours (pa) is available online. I have used 2-4-d to suppress weeds in timothy, and have had better control with banvel. For me, 2-4-d is real cheap, and it will knock the weeds back enough that the timothy will shade them out pretty well.
