Just looking for opinions. I have no cattle to feed, just trying to decide if I should sell my corn now or later.

Alan

(local price 45-52 cents under CBOT)

Sell-Sell-Sell.Those that wait for $5.00 may end up taking $2.50.Only 3 months ago there wasnt 1 in a 100 that thought corn would be the price it is now. Most thought that they would get a big LDP.

The speculators and funds have driven the corn market up and when they bail it will go down.Theres no shortage of corn and alot more acres will be planted next year.

CORN Dec 06 3686 CORN Mar 07 3846 CORN May 07 3906 CORN Jul 07 3944

Is it in a bin? When do you want to get rid of it?

To me 3.68 would be enough to get me to sell half and another half in March(selling the contract now).(local markets offer 91% of CBOT)

If I did, it would go to $5. If I waited , the price would drop to $1.50....

To me the price of corn is Christmas come early.. to others maybe not. To each his own...

Good luck either way...

I would contact a few livestock growers in your area and see if they would be interseted in a set price for all of it, even if it is delivered in the area. I am sure they will be paying more for it if they bought if from the elevator, and may give you more for it than the elevator will. Just something I would look into. Well see how it works for me next year. I am not realy up to speed on the current "contract" farming that goes on, so I'll have to get educated in the next 6 months or so. Any one have a explanation on how the whole "contracts" thing works with crops??

Do you mean 'forward contracting' to sell grain? It means you can, on any given day, agree to deliver sometime in the future,a given quantity at a given price. You get paid when you deliver. "New crop" means delivering the next crop at harvest. ie, new crop corn would be delivered the fall of '07. You can price for most months of the year, as contracts are traded on CBOT, etc. Look on www.farms.com or other market services for grain markets. Call Cargill, Golden Plump, Little Falls ethanol plant, etc. for their grain merchandising dept. You can also deal directly with the metro markets and deliver there- CHS, Bunge, etc.

At what price are you breaking even? If you're above that price, Sell. You could also sell half now and see what happens with the other half. Dad locked in 2.37 on three 1000 bu semi loads because it was past his break-even point. Now he looks like he was premature but then he didn't know if it was just hiccuping and gonna plummet again or not. Now, he's got another 5 locked in at 3.67 open navigation at Dubuque. He still has another 7 loads he's sitting on incase it keeps going.

Keep in mind, this time last year, cash price HERE was 1.87. Don't get greedy.
