I am desperate for any information about the Leyland 255 tractor. I have just bought one and would like to know a little bit about it... mainly year of manufacturer, type of diesel engine, and anything else of interest. I have checked the definitive book on tractors in NZ, which outlines all makes and models imported here over 100 years, and there is not one reference to this model... was it one of the first or last Leylands?

Neil: we had a 255 for a number of years and it worked very well for us. It was an update of the 344 model and we think it was an essentially detuned version of the 270. Same engine, same drivetrain, smaller tires. Ours was a 1975 and had the same 230 ci engine as the 270. Around here a lot of the 270 got a bad reputation which was not deserved. They got the reputation because a lot of them got the turbo treatment and were tuned for 90 horsepower for big two row forage harvesters. They went blam. If left at their factory settings, they ran and ran and ran. Our 255 pulled a 3x16 plough, 10 foot disc, 12 foot cultivator and baled thousands of bales with a JD square baler. The only thing that really seemed to be a problem was the fuel system which seemed to plug very often just using the normal 296 filters. The only reason for trading it off was that we took on another 250 acres (the we mentioned here is me) and I needed a bigger tractor as it was our main field tractor. I think they were a good serviceable tractor which has been maligned and overlooked a lot of times. If I was looking for another tractor of that type, I would gladly look at a Leyland. Good Luck. Tom

I have a Leyland 344 which is the same tractor before they were renumbered. It is a 1970 model.
A 255 is a 2 wheel drive 55 horse power tractor from the mid 1970s. It should have a 4 cylinder British Motors Diesel Engine. My Owners Manual and parts book were lost in a fire. When I went to replace them I was sent 255 manuals instead. They came from an Ontario Company who specialize in British Tractor Parts.

Hope this helps. George
