I've been looking at purchasing a 74 Ford 3400 Industrial loader/backhoe for around $8000. Just obtained an opportunity to purchase a '80 Ford 545A loader/backhoe for $6000. Intended use: trenching, bushogging, rock raking, general farm work.

Are these two Fords in the same league? How do their HP and capabilities compare? Weaknesses or concerns? parts availability?

Any comments welcome.

Joe, Which backhoe did you end up getting?
I had the same choice to make and ended up with the 1973 Ford 3400 (complete). I love it - what a great piece of history & equipment. My kids run it every day (ages 14 & 16) and everyone who has been out to my place has dug up at least one stump apiece. That says a lot for a piece of equipment - that it can stand up to the test of ignorant operators after 30 years of dedicated service and still stay out of the shop. John_V

Paul, I have Ford 420 Industrial loader. It fall between the two that you are looking at. The 420 has about 50/45 Engine/PTO HP with a Cat.2 3pt. The loader will lift about 3,000 Lb's. Parts and manuals at yuor local New Holland dealer. The rear tires on the 420 (17.5Lx24) are loaded bringing the total weight to about 7,000 Lb's. It will destroy anything that gets in it's way. I paid $8,200 about a year ago with less than 2,000 Hrs. Good luck, Joe
