I have questions for anybody that knows what happened here. 1. How do depositors get their money back? (basically how long until the FDIC gives you back your money?

2. How do depositors prove how much they have in account(s). bank statements? What about fraud?

3. Have any you guys had money in an accout at a bank that failed? (what did you do)?

4. Is the FDIC a bankrupt entity like all other federal government agencys? I am asking all of this because I have accounts at 1 bank and I dont want to be told that the bank ran off with MY money that I have on deposit and cant pay my bills. I am thinking about lowering my risk by opening another savings account at another bank. If I was an Indymac bank account holder I couldnt imagine what I would do if I lost all my cash, Assault? Beat the *hit out of a bank employee until I got my money. Go on the 6 -o-clock news and scream my head off.

I'm waiting for Roberto to actually apply his superior intellect and give us a better opinion than any all ready given. He's probably sorting through the other posts as I type this. I'm anticipating a great answer and the solution to all that is wrong in the world. He'll probably answer in 3 sentences or less. Go ahead profound one.

1) 1. How do depositors get their money back?

The ones I've seen (we had a few go under in the early 90s recession in CT) was like the other examples posted...bank closes on Friday, bank opens on Monday. Life goes on.

2) 2. How do depositors prove how much they have
in account(s). bank statements?

Have your statements if you're worried. Whoever takes over the bank just keeps using their computers for a while till they can get the accounts converted over to their system.

3) 3. Have any you guys had money in an accout at a bank that failed? (what did you do)?

I pulled mine out shortly before they failed, it wasn't much but it was next semester's tuition plus my living expenses. In hindsight, I would've been fine not having it for a weekend. I was afraid if it wasn't available for a couple of weeks I'd be hurting. (I worked my way through college with summer time and christmas time jobs...I didn't work during most of the school year so I depended on savings).

4) 4. Is the FDIC a bankrupt entity like all other federal government agencys

No, and we'd just have more inflation by printing money before they let FDIC not reimburse the $100,000. IndyMac will end up costing about $5 Billion out of the $52 Billion the FDIC has in it's insurance fund.

They sell the assets of the failed bank to cover the amounts > $100,000. In IndyMac's case, if I read the newspaper article right, they also covered 50% of the amount over $100,000 and issued "receivership certificates" for the rest.

That means they're quite confident they can get that 50% from selling IndyMac's assets.

So let's say you're a small organization that had $200,000 in an account on Friday morning.

Monday morning you could write checks for $150,000, but found yourself with a piece of paper that said if the FDIC can get enough money for the remaining assets, you'll receive a proportional amount of the $50,000 that is no longer in your account. So if they eventually recover enough to cover 60% of deposits over $100,000, you'll get another 10% ($5,000) from FDIC.

There have been some bank failures in the past where it was short-term liquidity that put the bank under...and when all was said and done FDIC had sold the bank's assets for enough money to pay 100% of deposits back, the creditors, AND actually had a profit (not sure if that goes to FDIC or the Treasury).

For most people, with under $100,000 and maybe more (talk to your accountant for the specific rules), I wouldn't worry about your own money.

Now for municipalities, businesses, good size farms, etc that may have more then $100k, it could cause issues. I know in the early 90s in Connecticut the State & Towns where worried about losing their tax receipts deposited in the banks that were in trouble. Or think about payroll. Those are the things that could set off reprecussions.

My bank failed in the 80's. Bank was visited by FDIC at closing time on Friday. The bank was reopened Monday morning with new owners{large bank headquartered in KC MO. My accounts were presented to me and I was sign if it was correct and then my money was available to me. I could have it Monday if I just wanted my money.but I had a loan with the Bank. I had a meeting Tuesday and was told to clean out my lock box and sign all my belongings were there. I then was able to take out a new lock box with the new bank. They refused to continue my loan at my old rate. They would prefer I paid it off. New savings and loan told me to send more loans like mine because I had it half paid for. We had a small rural farm bank ,the new bank kept all cd's and auto loans. Housing and farm loans were not renewed for the most part.

Put your money in a credit union. They are insured by a organization like the FDIC, but is far better funded - thus the backup on your accounts is on far firmer ground. Credit unions are not in the business of making risky realestate loans, either! Basically the members of the credit unions are the owners, not stockholders. So if the CU comes out ahead, all the members benefit. Thus CUs are far more responsible to their depositors. (Don't look at me, am a member of 3 CUs, haven't stepped foot in a bank for years!)

I think in this day and age, hedge'n your bets with money in two or more banks would be a good thing. I have a friend who is a "bank inspector" type person for the FDIC in MO, I asked her a while back how long it would take for me to get my money if my bank went under and she said it would not take too long but said for me to put enough money to pay my bills for a month in a mason jar and bury it in the back yard.

That was off the record and we were both drinking but I would say that is the most honest answer you will get.

Dave

If your bank is insured by the FDIC, and you have 100K or less in your account, you will get all your money.

What do you know about old tractors? What kind of tractor(s) do you have?

I've never once seen you talk about tractors, all you do is show up and put people down. The very people this site is designed for - Farmers, rural folks, and tractor enthusiasts. You are none of these. You are an environmetalist wacko.

Nor have you ever had the ability to answer any quetions put to you. You are a fool and a loser and no one wants you here.

Are you an atheist?
Who are you, or anyone, to say that the earth is in it's perfect state right here and now?
What kind of tractor(s) do you have, have ever had, or have ever operated?

Answers:
Yes
I'm the smartest person I know.
None

(Sorry evey one else, I am not try'n to feed the troll here, just had to say it.)

I demand the following, tell me where you live so that I can kick the *hit out of you. Please do not come back to this site....EVER. I have to assume that you are a mental patient or a punk kid that thinks being rude is funny. Go play in the middle of the freeway and get killed, (do me a favor)

I'd say you have some serious emotional issues. In all seriousness, have you been in or have you considered counseling? Do you have a fellow inmate who may help you talk through your issues?

In so many of the patients I counsel, the one common denominator is that they must first admit to and realise that they have a problem. Threatening someone physically on a hobby discussion board is certainly cause for concern.

For the sake of others, please seek help.

If you're a counselor why are you always coming on here and insighting the discord? Going after what a farmer does, maintaining the pest population and now a general discussion on a bank gone bust. If you had been around you would know this has been discussed and generally agreed that tractor talk is more like a coffee shop. Discuss most anything just don't be vulgar, mean, or disgusting. If you don't want the feedback your getting QUIT STIRRING THE POT

If you pay any attention at all you will see that I maintain calm while being physically threatened and verbally abused. These people have some serious issues. I'm sure some of it is genetic and some due to poor breeding.

But as always I will remain calm and offer to help those who are in need of it. But they must admit their problem before the healing can begin.

In your first reply you DEMANDED an explanation for the existance of this thread instead of "calmly" clicking back and going to the next. The tone of your first reply was warmish and you recieved heat in response. Perhaps there is a lesson in that.

I love tractors as much as the next guy but you cant talk about them all day long.

Here are the rules which I expect to be followed:

Didn't know you were in charge. Do Kim adn Chris know they've been replaced?

If you really are a counselor, you would use a much nicer approach than demanding that every topic be tractor related. You would obviously know that these boards resemble the old general store and the topics will wander at times. If you truly are a counselor, you should ask for your tuition money back because you got taken.

I've noticed that this site has a discussion board for many different topics. I believe the proper solution to the problem we face is to have a seperate forum strictly for the dicussion of politics. In that manner some of you truly uninformed individuals would have a place to vent your rather uninformed opinions. It would keep this place more respectable and would make me feel that sharing my thoughts would not be a waste of my valuable time. I'm quite certain that soon you would understand what an asset I would be to the topics at hand. I would be able to read through your opinions and then supply a more well thought out one.
