I recently installed new rings, had the head rebuilt, and adjusted the bearings on my A/C Model M crawler. I have close to 45 hrs on the engine and used 30 wt non detergent oil. How many more hours should I run the tractor before I change oil to 30 wt detergent? Thanks stan

Re: Engine oil change after new rings DD two stroke SF-2 in reply to 37chief, 05-11-2008 21:29:03
I was veering off on a direction started by Sam in WA who got going about DD.
I prefer to use the SF-2 oil in any oil burning engine as it doesn't soot/ash up the engine like other oils. HD diesel SF-2 synthetic in everything around here. Except for a couple of really gross oil burners which get sae60.

The discussion over what is the "right oil" will continue for as long as oil is used. Goes double for the drooling Detroit two stroke diesel.
The one and main thing to look for above all else with two stroke diesel oil is that it's SF-2 rated low ash oil. If it isn't SF-2 DO NOT USE IT.
As for straight weight vs. multiweight oil in a two stroke diesel or any other engine. I hesitate to venture there. The DD manual does begrudgingly agree to the use of multiweight oil as a 2nd or 3rd choice.

B&D , AC M crawler doesn't use a DD engine, it has an AC gas engine. On another note ,due to the fact that the ZDP has been lowered or removed from all the gasoline engine oils ,it is highly recomended that you run diesel service oil in any engine that has flat tappets. ZDP is the product that protects the cam and lifters from damage due to the sliding motion , 15w-40 shell is one of the ones that has the needed ZDP .

I would have changed the oil to 15w-40 at about 25 hours. Every engine I have overhauled/rebuilt gets its first oil change at 25 hours and we start to run 15w-40. The only exception to that rule is our Detroit engines, they run for 25 hours then get a change to 30 weight. Most engines we rubuild get run in on the dyno, but the last couple I"ve done, we just put them back in the Cat and went to work.

Like the others... I just use regulat detergent oil. I used to just run it for half an hour or so and drain. More to get my "finger prints" and dirt, and such flushed out. 40 years ago rings had to be broken in. That doesn't seem to be a problem any more.

1st oil change should have been done after 10-30 minutes of engine operation.
Get rid of that non detergent oil and use some modern 10W-30 or likely 15W-40 as the bottom end is likely a bit loose.

I would have already changed out the break in oil. 20 hours is where I change out on a new engine.
