I think my starter has gone bad on my 48 jd m. Should I replace the 6 volt with a 12 volt and change the generator over. How expensive is to rebuild a starter.

Your 6 volt starter is built heavier than a 12 volt. If you would change it over to 12 volt, use your 6 volt starter.

Just get a rebuilt one from HARVEY BROS probably will run 125 or so it will have a new BENDIX and warranty then some 1ga cables probably a new 720A battery. Tractor is 50pluss yrs old and needs to have good stuff to operate good if it aint worth fixing rite give it away.

It's started just fine this long on six volts. The starter just needs a normal cleaning up,turn the com, fresh bushings, a new bendix. Scrawny little #4 cables for 12V don't work here. It needs 2/00 cables and a 800CCA or larger battery. Run the + chassis return cable to the bolt the starter mounts on. If somebody has swapped polarity of the battery or coil. It will suffer a weaker spark and therefore poor starting.

I think the starter will last longer on 12V than 6, so I have heard and experienced. But if you get it repaired properly, it will probably last a long time. Also, I don't think an alternator would fit under the hood, and they look bad hanging out. We have an M and it turns over easy and starts instantly on 6V! good luck!
