I am not going "Tree Hugger" on ya. But does anyone know what would be the best tree to plant for absorbing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere? And would be suitable for south central South Dakota?

20 years ago my aunt and uncle received 10,000 red pine trees from the arborist tree hugger group, (or whatever) for free. they planted them on their property in Northern Mich. Get trees that you can get for FREE. Dont spend money on them.

Not exactly what you asked but I think you may be able to capture more carbon in the Dakotas with grass than with trees. I don't know about SC SD but in SW ND it is a real pain to get trees to grow. My field windbreaks and shelterbelts have required much cultivation, herbacides and covercrops. However, Russian Olives do grow well, but I expect they will soon be banned. Have you thought about a windmill generating electricity.

I have a Lincoln Navigator that I am thinking about planting about 6 feet under. I think that would help more than any other kind of item I could plant. Actually I did plant about 25 blue spruces and 25 white pines the other day. Also did two english walnuts and two sweet cherry trees. Now I have to wait to see if the deer and rabbits ruin them like usual.

Tree of heaven,(Ailanthus altissima), For dry and poor land and absorbs the most CO2. In Europe it called the Sidewalk tree.

I sure would not recommend tree of heaven...most foresters in North America consider it a weed at best. It is not native and once established will quickly out compete many of our native trees. Many urban centers have banned the sale and/or planting of this species.

please by all means DONT plant tree of heaven! I went to school for forestry and i can tell you that it is one of the biggest invasive speices in the eastern states, between that and multi-flora rose. I am in the north east so i dont know the native spiecs but go your local universtiy or even gree house and ask them what speices fit that best fit your need.
