Sicklebar Mowers: care and feeding

regarding the bar itself, what's the recommended lubricant and lubrication procedure -- seems like it doesn't take long to begin to squeal. I've been using a spray-on white grease. Seems like anything heavier would tend to foul with grass and weeds - is oil better?

Also I've struggled with how much tension to put on the knife sections -- I'm afraid too much tension would lead to excessive wear and/or breakage. Too little allows grass to get trapped between the bar and the sickle. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

i use a spray on DRY type graphite lube. it puts on a heavy film that does not weather off easily. also i cover the bar with a tarp when i'm storing the implement. best to put it under a shed if you can. look a your owners manual for adjustments on the knife section. it should get you the specs. for proper adjustments. i'm like you, if it's too much gap at the knife sections, IT WILL PLUG, and if it's too little it will wear the knife prematurely. LOL

Do you know where I can get a pittman assy for my mod. 41 mower?
I just broke the bolt off flush as well as an easy out also so I suppose I'll need the whole assy.
Thanks Daniel

Mark I used sickle mowers for several years till I purchased a Vemeer 6200 Disc mower.Build you a sickle using the coarse serrated sections, and put in new wear plates if they are used John Deere 350 doesn't use wear plates, also use a double section on the tip prevents clogging on end. As far as lube,I used a good high temp grease for bearings and give sickle bar a shot of motor oil before I went to the field. As far as adjustments on blade if shims are used check them. I take a three pd. ball peen hammer and tighen blade by knocking blade tensioners down, sounds rough and crude but it works,I can run in fifth and sixth gear mowing. Hope this helps later gman
