tiller speed--too fast?

I am thinking about getting a 3 pt. tiller for my tractor. I have a John Deere 730 diesel and at 540 pto speed my ground speed will be just a shade over 2 MPH. I was wondering if this is to fast.

I have used tillers before, but the tractor always had a creeper gear. I am thinking 2 MPH is too fast.

Any opinions or shared experience would be appreciated.

You must have installed either a very tall set of rear tires. or have one of the optional transmissions. 1st is supposed to be 1-1/3mph.

I have one for my ford 8n and it works fine. You just have to learn how to use it. You definetly have to make more that one run. I make three and it works fine.-Bill

Tillers got a bad rep because some fellows were trying to do too much in one pass. They would go as slow as possible and absolutely powder the soil. Not good.
Make a first pass to rip up the top, let any plant residue dry and get crispy, real shallow.
In a week or so, come back and do what you have to do for your crop. If you get a tiller see if you can research any operating tips for it.
I like my tiller but I made some spectacular mistakes with it as well.
Good Luck.

How about a WD? in reply to John730D, 04-18-2008 05:41:33
How would a Allis WD be? Would it be slow enough? Or would I over work the transmission clutch? Looking at a 5 footer.

I have one on my super m and it goes a little to fast but at the same time it does an ok job. guess it really depends on the condition of the soil you are using it in.
