What name brand motor oil do you use? Myself I use CenPecCo.Very costly, (paid $800 for 55 gallon last week), but always had good luck with it and hate to change. I see a lot of farmers have used it over the years because I see the barrels laying in the machine shops.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, if you want REAL data backed by facts on Used Oil Analysis (UOA), check out bobistheoilguy.com and read a bit. Some of the cheapo oils seem to test fairly well.

15W-40 pre-2007 soot Rottela in ordinary vehicles under average conditions.
In applications with extreme cold, extreme heat or extreme pressure. use a real synthetic, not quasi synthetic.
Amsoil, Mobile 1, Lubrication Engineers or Royal Purple are real.

I use whatever is the cheapest that meets the SAE ratings I need. Lately I have been buying the oil at Walmart. I highly doubt that with todays modern engines that the type of oil matters. If your engine is going to blow up because you change oils then you must have a problem with the engine. I would think it is real hard to prove the oil manufacturers claims on most of these specialty oils or else all of the thousands of scientist and engineers at the auto companies must be stupid.

Well, a little bit of everything gets run in our family...

I run Mobil 1 5w-20 in the Honda Accord 2.3 four banger, 5 or 6k between changes. Mobil 1 10w-30 in the Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 v-6, 5k between changes. Mobil 5000 in my 51 IH L-120, changed every two years or so. Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 in my Farmall H, change once a year. All of the other tractors at the farm get CaseIH 15w-40 diesel oil, changed at 75 to 100 hours.

Dad runs Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5w-20 in the 05 F-150 and 5w-30 in the 98 F-150. He usually runs them 3 to 4k miles.

Mom's Buick gets whatever the oil change place in town puts in it. She gets it changed with the oil life monitor falls below 10%, which usually equates to at least 5k.

Brother puts Shell Rotella 15w-40 in the 98 and 06 Dodge Cummins.

All of the small engines on augers, tillers, etc. get Mobil 5000 10w-30 in them. The newest riding lawnmower gets Mobil1 10w-30.

I've had many different vehicles over the years, and until I started spending more than a couple thousand on the purchase price I just put in whatever was the cheapest off the shelf at Wally World, along with the Fram filters. NEVER had a problem, never had a filter go bad, never lost oil pressure, never blew up an engine (and I ran stuff pretty hard). My 95 Thunderbird with 4.6 OHC v-8 would blow some smoke after idling a bit, but that was due to a poor design on the valve seals, not the cheapo oil.

As a matter of fact, I can't say that any vehicle or tractor or engine that anyone in my family has ever owned suffered from an oil related failure, EVER.

Now that I have invested a considerable amount of $$ in newer vehicles, and the fact that I live in a climate where temps average 120 degrees in the summer, along with steep mountain grades - I feel the extra protection of full synthetic is worth it to me. With the extended drain intervals I'm not spending that much more.

Our diesel equipment gets Rotella 15w-40. My personal vehicles... '95 Chevy w/ 5.7L, '96 Chevy w/ 6.5L, and '02 GMC Denali w/6.0L all run Amsoil synthetics. The oil in the gassers are capable and guaranteed to go 35K between oil changes for highway driving and I think 17,500 for typical driving, filter upto 25K! The diesel is good for 25k or 12,500. Expensive but worth it. Less oil changes which in the end it actually costs less. And I get 1/2-1 1/2 mpg better in the gassers depending on the driving situation. Get 1-2 mpg better in the diesel and when loaded fully it only drops 2-2 1/2 mpg as opposed to 3-4 mpg.

I agree with Jerry. Watch the SAE rating and the oil will be fine.

If you think one certain oil will cause an engine to blow up how the heck can they sell it and stay in business.

I use Cenex 15-40 oil in everything (MTA, 300, 560, 1066, 1086, MX200, 1660 Combine, 76 F600, 79 F150, 03 F250, and 04 Mountaineer) just because it is available at our local Coop and handy to pickup. That way I have to store only one oil.

It's rated for the diesels. If it's good enough for the diesels it will work in the gassers also.

You would be surprised at what different oils will do to the inside of an engine. Pennzoil is very bad about leaving sludge. Running 15w-40 in a gasser will slightly hurt the fuel mileage as well as possible other things. Diesel (Compression ignition- hence the "C" in the rating) and Gasoline (spark ignition- hence the "S" in the rating) are foumulated differently to lube differently. Obviously you can run both ways but supposedly it is harmful to the engine. I can't positively say but this is what several lube techinicians have told me. Synthetics are the way to go!

If Synthetics are the way to go, why isn't everyone using them? Are we all idiots.

I haven't seen anyone who can justify the extra cost to me yet.

As far as the 15-40 hurting the engine- I've been doing it for over 30 years now and have yet to rebuild an engine. (Knock on wood) I'll take that back I had to rebuild the engine in my F150 at 165,000 miles back in about 1990.

The only thing that I've ever used synthetic oil in is the 13 speed RoadRanger. It called for Syn50, the transmission was tight, and I figured there was no need to mess with that when I installed the PTO.... so it got new syn50 and I haven't looked at it since. It didn't look like it was changed perhaps more than once if at all in 800000 miles either.
Otherwise I use plain old dino oil in everything else. So long as it meets SAE specs called for by the machine it's good enough for me. I've used everything from Walmart specials up to Esso XD3 and NewHolland branded oils. I've never noticed a pinch of difference between any of them.... As long as it meets the spec I'll use it, and the cheaper the better.
My mothers VW TDI calls for a Synthetic 5W40 and it seems to me that an oil change for that car is something like 65 bucks for oil and filter.... My Ford Ranger costs about 20 bucks.... and for what it's worth, I change it about every 10000 miles or twice a year, or whenever I think of it, or..... It's approaching 200 miles now and still going strong. Oil's aren't what they used to be.

You said it! While I personally only use synthteics in rear ends and transmissions, I cant justify the use of it in an engine, even with the extended drains. My wifes Buick has 202000 give or take on the odomenter, and have yet to put a synthetic in the engine. While alot of the technology looks impressive to me, I wont be foolish enough to fall for the Amsoil hype, when there are oils thats are just as good or better and have an ASE rating.IU knida agree with Steven, I cant think of one oil related failure, or even a problem with straight dino oils in any of my engines, and not one has had a synthetic in it. My new truck, well Im not sure what Im going to do yet, but will probably use staright plain jane dino in it!

I suppose eventually everyone will use synthetics. Several new vehicles come with them in the rearend, tranny, and or crankcase. Why not a sudden change? Probably the same reason you are just now switching to 30" rows. Wide rows worked for ya so why change. What you don't realize is the small benefits of the change add up eventually. Be it oil or row width. And I can prove that with Amsoil it is cheaper to use it than use a conventional oil. Of course you can go 35k on conventional oil but that is really pressing your luck.

Well, I know it costs a little more but it doesnt take oil to make it and it lasts at least 12000 mile between changes. As far as being idiots, there are some out there but generally its like has been said right here"I use Penzoil" "I use Shell Rotella", etcSome people are just satisfied with what they have. Also, I have never even heard of many of the oils that have been mentioned here. I suppose where you are in the country makes a difference . Henry

They run hot and it only costs a few bucks more a year for a few eKohlers and briggs.

Any brand that meets the SAE weight spec for the engine and also meets the API classification for the oil, also specified by the engine manufacturer. The API classifications are backward compatible so using the latest value is fine. For example on an automobile if it called out a 10W30 with an API classification of SE and the latest classification is SL, that good.

I have been a fan of synthetic since it came out. Mostly I use syntec 20=50 and in winter 10-40. All my vehicles have at least 125000 and my truck has 165000 with nary a problem with the engines. Now transmissions, that another story. Four in the Ford truck and two in the Jeep. I now use Synthetic trans fluid . Hope that helps. They trans rebuilder says it will definity help/. The 2004 Cheve Suburban came with auto trans fluid. Henry
