Here's a twist on a 4 stroke engine. Inject water after the exhaust stroke and get steam for another power stroke. Cool

This rotary valve diesel looks more promising:

There is a another guy called "fattywagon" at the listerengine site who is tinkering with this and also a closed loop engine. The six cycle engine could be made to work but where are you going to find enough demineralized water while on the road?
Cost and complexity will be a factor.
Frozen and busted engines & equipment will be common once again. Something that hasn't been much since the 1950's/1960's. As for fatty's closed cycle engine. His descriptions show his lack of understanding physics & chemistry. The auxillary equipment to manufacture pure oxygen and scrub CO2 made the closed loop engine impossible to operate at a net gain.

I always say try, try again. Nothing wrong with that. Every advancement is made in that matter and technology is always changing to make possible what was impossible..

I"ve seen his work. An avide and well intentioned tinkerer. However his understanding of physics, fluid dynamics and general engineering. Leave something to be desired.

Interesting ! But as mentioned in the text, water
or vapor/ condensation going past the rings
would dulute the lube oil, thus causing
lubrication problems. Farm type steam engines
use a soulable oil to lubricate the piston and
valves, but don"t have a crankcase full of oil
to become diluted.
