Not too many miles from my home,a huge number of animals died of neglect. To set up the story, the family dairy and beef farm's dad had suffered a nervous breakdown,so decided to do some trucking to get off the farm for awhile. The 23 year old son was left mainly in charge along with some hired help. They milked 50 cows and had some beef. The mild tank dropped FAST and the yound guy just said the heck with all of it and left the hired help on his own. There were 75 animals in a loose housing arangement with freeze every day thaw it out watering and so on,they were not watered or fed for many days.60 of them died and were left to freeze in their own manure and there were still 15 bearly alive and saved when they were found. This story is in deed true, and I just can't begin to understand how it could come about. Can you just imagine the racket those poor thirsty starving cattle would make untill it was too late, why wouldn't someone hear or do somthing to save them? The young guy was threw in the psych ward to help prevent criminal charges,so who is going to get penn time? The dad out on the road? The young guy in charge in the mental hospital?Or the help who at this point of the story and full or half truths neglected to look after the cattle???Very very bad, very very sad,and quite a catastrophie to say the least.pd.

I've heard of cases like that over the years. One guy who sold dairy equipment found a stanchion barn with just one cow alive when he went to talk to the guy about an unpaid bill. He said that the only reason that cow was alive was because she broke the stanchion and was walking around with it around her neck. Another more recent case was a cattle hauler who went to get a cow. He said he hated to turn the guy in,but the rest of the cows were just pitifully thin and had no feed. He agreed to give up the cows and there weren't any charges filed. Dad used to tell that when he was a kid, there was a guy right next door for a year or two that came near to starving his cows. He said grandpa felt sorry for them and took a load of hay up and fed them a couple of times.

Sounds like part of the problem is paying out too much money for somebody else to do the work. Father and son should have been more than able to handle that alone, and the son alone this time of year. Milking 50 cows just isn't that much work anymore, I've milked 80 alone for weeks at a time in the winter.

I remember a news story where a person left their horses to the care of a "friend". By time it was caught, many of the the colts and young horses had died along with some of the older ones. Some of the ones still alive were too far gone to save. A few did survive. When they interviewed the friend, the response was "I drove by every day and the pasture was green". Yeah, weeds, and not much of them and nothing that a horse could eat.

I think if things keep going the way they are we will be hearing more of this. Sadly. It"s not easy to make it at all, and nothing today helps. Stress causes mental illness, and it"s hard to deal with along with making a living. So, today we have a recipe for disaster.

Thats no excuse what-so-ever.If they couldn't tend the cows they could have called the local sale barn and they have people that will come pick them up and take them to the market.Have known of several cases where this was done after the owner was not able to tend the animals.

It may not be an excuse, but people that are messed up mentally aren"t thinking right. Not a defense either, I merely say we will see more of this....and that"s not good. In my area people neglect animals all the time now. People that intervene are called trouble makers etc.

Had a similar case here. Farmer left the animals to die in a remote corner of the county. When he was found, there was 30 some charges of animal abuse, failure to properly dispose of an animal carcass upon him. The animal neglect got him 4 years and the failure to properly dispose of them landed a 10,000 fine.
