I have a 4240 w/ Quad Range, everthing works great except that the clutch is very hard to inch, it never slips, and inches fair in C and D range, but A and B range are hard to engage slowly. It is only a problem when there is no load on the tractor. If I did'nt have a loader on it, I would'nt even notice it.

Can I adjust it to engage a little softer?

what is your clutch pressure? should be around 170 i believe. this is a wet clutch so it can be slipped more than dry clutch. on 15 speed powershifts ive seen the clutch valve worn on the inside where an arm runs and this causes probelms when using the clutch pedal. the quad range clutch uses the same design for a valve and linkage. i would start by taking the clutch valve housing off and looking at the clutch valve. or replace it. R62724 is the number and its 50 bucks.

"Can I adjust it to engage a little softer?"

Short answer, No.

Has it been working OK for years and got this way on it's own? Or has there been a recent repair and now the problem is noticable?

Now I don't mean to cause trouble here, but--what are you doing, inching with a clutch in the first place? I was taught that's how you burn up clutches and spend big money splitting tractors to replace them.

Throttle it back to a slow idle. If the tractor doesn't idle slow enough I'd be adjusting throttle linkage, not clutch linkage.

Dan, he's more than likely backing up to something to hitch up. And yes some are pretty jumpy and others aren't bad. I haven't found a fix yet for them yet but will someday. chris
