I always wondered about mustard.. I mix some mustard seed in with the turnips, I always wondered if that was the same type of mustard, and they just let it go to seed, then grind up the seeds.. Not trying to hijack your question, but just wondered..

It's a valid question and yes it is ground up to make table mustard. The fellars up in northern Canada raise it commercially and supply a big share of the worlds market and we were told in a meeting Friday that we can expect the delivered price to triple soon because of the Ethanol demand. I was curious as to what alternative crops they can raise to make ethanol up there because of thier short growing season I'm guessing Barley because they sure can't make ethanol from mustard. The mustard they raise is more of a hybrid variety bred for milling. I've learned a lot about mustard seed since working here. I spent a lot of my farm days trying to kill the stuff as a weed.

The ethanol plant that Terra Grain is building near me uses wheat. I think the two plants at Yorkton will also be wheat.

Husky (or whatever it's called) in Minnedosa has switched from winter wheat to corn because they couldn't access enough wwheat at 6.50/bu. I believe Lanigan is operating on winter wheat and Andrew wheat.

There won't be any ethanol made from mustard seed. The ethanol will be made from wheat or corn in Canada. Biodiesel will however be made from canola and couldme made from some kinds os mustard. Mustard contacts are around .40/lb so far. I am from Manitoba, not many takers on the mustard so far: canola fits the same place in the rotation and pencils out better (here) unless you have a very dry year or a year with a lot of insect pressure.

Thanks KRUSS that is what I wanted to know. I'm suprised you can raise corn up there I figured the growing season was too short especially if you have a late spring and a dry year.CT

Old crop No. 1 yellow mustard is selling for .60/lb if and when they can find any (mustard is 50 lb/bu). As for the corn, certain areas are more suitable than others. Most varieties are 2500 Corn Heat Units or less. Don't forget, the further north you go the longer the hours of sunlight in the summer. It's not dark long in July!!

Is that .60 Canadian? Our dollar is pretty weak right now. I guess our contract price isn't bad right now if the brokers can find any and they aren't bankrupt. I know we're going to have to bend over on the next contract I'm sure. I forgot about your long summer days up there. I can't remember our heat unit days around here it's been too long ago I'm thinkin around 3000 to 3300 the old number used to be around 105 to 108 day corn.
