Turf Tires vs Ag Tires

Been looking at some smaller loader tractors for misc. chores. Saw a Ford 3000 the other day that had turf tires, instead of the normal Ag tires.

With turf tires, will I still be able to push snow in the winter and push around a little bit of dirt in the summer? Not planning on digging to China or anything, but is it asking for trouble getting turf tires instead of ag tires on a loader tractor?

Turf tires are good if you intend to drive alot on sealed roads. They run smoother and wear a lot slower than lugs.

Turf tires will not pull your pants down on wet grass. Great for turf and turf only.

My 8n with 11.2-28 ag tires can pull more dirt in a box blade than my NAA with 16.9-24 diamond tread turf tires...

Depends a lot on the type of turf tire. The older style diamond tread is nearly worthless on wet grass or any other surface. The newer style 7 rib design isn't bad, especially on a 4x4 tractor.

If the price for the tractor is right, I have seen people run a set of light tire chains year round. Otherwise you are probably better off replacing them or waiting for a tractor with the right tire.

Traction is the only problem. I bought 9523 Simplicity, same as 5020 Allis, with turf tires fully loaded, mower, loader, blade, and tire chains. I built a drive for my factory that was over 100 yards long which needed raised two feet most of the way. I used the loader then to bring in subsoil to bank the sides as well as top soil. I used the loader also to remove the top soil and some of the sub soil over a knole for the base stone and mill run to cover it. I also used this tractor to dig my truck dock and remove top soil for a 100 X 70 molding room.
This is only a few thing I was able to do with this tractor with turf tires and chains before I bought my own backhoe.
It took a bunch of time but when you have a dream and very little money time is what you have the most of.

The difference between driving down a grassy hill and sliding to bottom out of control.

If you buy it, get a set of chains for winter use.

With those on you will need chains and or weight on the back, I have regular, loaded, field and road firestone ag type on my 850 ford w/loader, and my friend has loaded turf tires with chains and 711 loader, he gets around all year and does not have much slippage, my 850 is fine, except ice in areas that are not level, using a counter weight and no chains, I can get through deep snow, sometimes depends on what is underneath, I would prefer ag or a lugged tire over turf type

That tractor with some heavy weight on the back and chains would be fine for what you want to do, once you get some time on it, you'll see how it performs, that weight on the back helps quite a bit.

I had an AC 3 cyl diesel of about 20 hp once, with ag tires, and had a rear mounted 3 blade lawn type mower. As mentioned, for mowing grass you are in great shape. But try to use the little tractor for anything else and forget it. Course the rest of the story is that the tractor was fairly light so you would still have the problem of the tractor vs work to be done, weight ratio.

I used turf tire for several years on my smallest tractor always sliping and sliding in the mud. Last year I changed over to regular ag tires and no more problems. In fact, they grip so good I have to watch out from digging a hole if the tractor stops at a stump or other obstacle. Never more turf tires. Henry

I wouldn't unless you're gonna use it to mow your lawn.
