Well its ST. Pats day so its the day to plant potatoes. If it will ever stop raining long enough I'll be out doing so. I lay mine on the ground then cover with hay or straw so in the fall they are easy to dig up. Pull the straw off and there most of them are right on the ground.

Here's a way to plant potatoes that I haven't tried but intend to some day. Stack up 2 or 3 rubber tires for each hill, fill with dirt and plant your potatoes in the center. As potato plants grow keep adding more tires and dirt. You'll end up with each hill being about 3' high by fall. Then, just remove the tires and the entire hill will be exposed for picking.

A few years ago my BIL planted potatoes in a tire. AS the plants grew he kept adding more dirt and more tires. He had a stack over 6 foot tall. When it was time to dig, he kept taking off dirt and tires untill at the bottom were a few potatoes with a 6 foot stalk. He never tried it again.

Old timers here plant on Valentines Day.{South and Central Louisiana). Some also plant by the moon. I planted in January, February, and March several years ago. Some came up earlier but all were ready about the same time. Mother nature has them ready when the snap beans are ready.

Got a few of mine coming up. Planted then around Feb 14. Most years it works out, every once in a while a late freeze will get them.

Sorry no pictures. All I do is drop them on the ground, after the bed has been tilled etc. Then just cover them with 6-12 inches of straw. Been doing it that way for 10 plus years and it has always worked well

I tried mulching with hay one year, but ended up with so much grass sprouting that I gave up on it. What do you do about all the grass next year? I'm assuming you have "grass" or "prairie" hay, consisting mostly of whatever is growing in the field.

We used rice hulls several years. Not much weed problems.. At that time rice hulls were free but had to be picked up.

I use old hay that has been wet a few times so the weed/grass seed doesn't cause me much if any problem

Not planted yet but did manage to get them cut. Both of my neighbors planted thiers on Fri. Rain all day today and a little yesterday. should be dry enough by Friday, I like to use the layem down and cover em up with straw too. a whole lot easier to pick em. Neighbors like to plant hills. go figure.

I planted Kennebec, Norland and Yukon last year.
I planted them on March 31st and it rained & was cold right after that. It's too wet here in MD to plow and they're calling for more rain. I guess it will get dry during the summer like last year. Hal

No I haven't. I have seen them growing but never seen the end results. The one I saw was an old tractor tire about half full of rotted manure and covered with straw like Old mentioned. A google will show more results than you can shake a stick at.

Fertilzer has jumped up 10 dollars a bag in reply to old, 03-17-2008 09:52:52
Planning on getting 3 rows in, red and white potatoes. With the cost of things these days (fuel) i'm not planting much of a garden this year.

I'll tell you what, 10-10-10 fertilizer has jumped up from 3.45 a bag two years ago to 14.50 a bag from southern states today. *sigh*

I only do organic type of gardens so no fertilizer for me. I do put down about 6 inches of horse manure on the garden before I till it up. Doing that has worked well for me for years. I have had mato plants that got so big they knock over the cages and then grow on the ground. Last year I had some plants that where 10 plus feet long

I'd love to, but the frost is probably still 2 feet deep. It's an awful lot of work to use the ice auger to make the hills. Saturday morning it was down to about 5 degrees here again. Ask me in another month.

We'll be planting about a quarter acre this year. Two weeks ago we planted some under plastic mulch to see if they would get an early start and allow us some new potatoes to market sooner than normal. I dug a couple up yesterday since I didn't see any sprouts above ground. The eyes are beginning to grow and also send out some roots, but I guess the soil is still to cold, even under the plastic mulch.

We wanted to plant the rest this weekend or today, but we've got a forcast for 3-5" of rain tonight and tommorrow (very unusual storm indeed) so I think we'll just wait 'til later this week.

Christopher

Well in my area as of right now we are over as far as rain by around 5 inches and I hope it stays that way and we don't dry up in the summer. It would be nice to get a 2nd cutting of hay again this year. I had one of those things called a real job about 8 or so years ago till the doctor told me I was retired so now I just play farmer and work on keeping old tractors running and from the scrap man
