A man told me that if a 400 had 3 freeze plugs on each side that it was a 4 bolt main, but if it only had to then it was a 2bolt. is this true, i dont think so. He also said that there were 400's that some were externally and some were internaly balanced, I thought they were all externally. any answers, thanks-Caleb

Caleb, you are a man that was born about 40 years too late! You would have been great in the musclecar era. Problem is that your heart is in the right place but putting together 400 small blocks is something for a rich older retired guy. It gets so pricey and when your done the gas mileage is very bad. Smaller cars can be cool too and they can be very reliable and get great gas mileage. Find yourself an old volkswagon diesel rabbit or escort diesel and show everybody how you can get 50 mpg with it. Now that would be cool! There are a lot of them on ebay. That will also keep the cops off your tail all the time. I can only imagine how they will get you if you drive a hopped up Nova on the street. If you are dead set on the 400 they do have some quirks. I had a 400 small block in a jeep pickup 20 years ago. Was a 4 speed and the flywheel was alomst $200 at the chevy dealer. Mine came out of a 1970 Impala and it had 4 bolt mains. 2 bolt or 4 bolt are about the same. Don't seek out a 4 bolt. If I were you I would find a 350 vortec out of a pickup and have a 3 angle valve job, some new rings and a nice dual plane intake. Vortec heads are very good and are plentiful and cheap. The 350 vortec will run as good as the 400 and will be much easier to get and will be a newer casting with lots less chance for problems. 400 was kind of the b@stard child of the chevy family and they have a lot of little quirky problems. Stick with the 350's and let the circle track guys have the rest of the 400's for sprint cars. Better yet, get the volkeswagon diesel and be an innovater to your friends. Good luck.

I've got three 400 s.b.c.'s. Two of them have three freeze plugs and one has two freeze plugs. One of the three freeze plug blocks has 4-bolt. I don't believe there are any absolutes or here. I am pretty sure, however, that the 4-bolts were made during the first couple of years of 400 production. You hear all kinds of rumors and b.s. about how you can identify this or that part based on some external clues, but you don't really know until you start taking it apart! I've seen too many things that don't follow the rules!

ALL 400 s.b.'s, as they came from the factory, were externally balanced. Like the one guy said, you can buy a bolt on balance plate to use any automatic flexplate. I will say however that the externally balanced flexplates and dampners are readily available and not much different in cost. Just go to Summitracing.com or the equivalent. I know Speedway motors sells the balance plate but I'll bet you can get that from Summit as well.

For any street motor, two bolt is fine. Put studs in the bottom end if it will help you sleep at night. Keith Black has affordable pistons that will allow the 350 rod in the 400. The 350 rod has more meat on the big end; just what you want for hot rod use.

You can use any small block head, just be sure to add the "Steam Holes". Use a head gasket as a template and drill away! Note that the 400 has it's own head gasket for the larger bore and steam holes.

I'm running one of the aforementioned 400's now in my drive to work car. The short block was left over from dirt track racing. With overdrive, 2.73 gears and a mild cam I'm getting 23 mpg on the highway!

Everybody is on the money here only thing I can add is if you're rebuilding it using the old heads you better have the heads magna fluxed for cracks because that was a big problem and finding good ones in the junk yard are tough unless you know the guy and can take a load to the machine shop and have them tested and only pay for the good pair or buy a magna flux kit and do them yourself. Last 400 I did wound up with one side with 195 valves and the other was 202 I wasn't racing it and it ran good and still is. Good Luck CT

A 400-automatic trany can be used with a standard trany. Install a special weighted plate prior to the flywheel. Working fine on my truck for 20 years now.

A two bolt block converted to four bolt mains is stronger than a factory four bolt block. You main concern is going to keep the engine from boiling over. Mating the block steam holes to new steam holes drilled in the head gasket & heads will make or break your engine
