Just got this car yesterday. On the way home, the temperature gauge was running between 1/2 and 3/4.Seems high to me. Electric fan never came on. How do I check the fan and switches to see which is not working? The car has 114,000 miles, 3.1 engine. No water on dipstick or oil in radiator. Runs great. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. I don't want to ruin this thing before I get to drive it. Thanks everyone,Ted.

TURNING ON THE a/c should also turn on the fan.
At idle, not moving, this vehicle should defintely kick on the fan or overheat otherwise

Fan should come on at 231°, which is right up there on the guage.

I used to check 'em by throwing the A/C on.

The fans will come on once the temp reaches a high limit somewhere around 210 degrees.

Did someone just change a hose or thermostat or flush the radiator? The 3.1 has bleeder valves that you have to bleed the cooling system. One is located right above the water pump, and one is near the driver side of the engine near the thermostat housing. Your owners manual should tell how to bleed the system. It's not a hard procedure but you must follow it.

I believe the one at the water pump can be bled with the enging off, but the one near the thermostat must be bled with the engine warm and running.

If it has an older obd 1 (on board diagostic) using a jumper to access the codes also runs the fan. Not sure about obd 2
