I have read in different forums, questions regarding engine oils in diferent modles of tractors. My father, until his death, used 30W Valvoline engine oil in our Fordson Super Major for as long as I could rember. When I took over the farm, I kept using this oil as well.
I used to drive tractor trailer for a number of years prior, and owning my own trucks, I used Shell Rotella 15W40.
When I quit driving truck, I worked part time as a parts persson at my local Case IH dealership. They sold, and still sell Case IH 15W40 oil. Not being familliar with their oil, I asked the difference between Valvoline, Shel Rotella, and Case IH oils.
I was shown a chart, compairing these oils, and the reasurch results where mind blowing. Case IH oils had way more additives surpassing most all other oils in the market, including Valvoline, and Shell Rotella.
After seeing thiese results, I switched all my oils to Case IH oil. Engine oil,and Trans/Hydraulic oil. I use it in my Fordson Dexta, David Brown 880, 655 Massy Furguson swather, as well as my Super Major. I also will be using this Case IH oils for my Cockshutt 1650 tractor.
With Case IH oil, you can run your equipment for at least 100 hours more inbetween oil changes. (300 hours instead of 200 hours) They sell their oils in bulk. 15W40 and trans/hydraulic. Go to your local dealer to see their data, on oils. I know you will be impressed with it. I sure was. Hopfully this helps.

I ran my car all through college on the cheapest Wal-Mart brand oil I could find, sometimes other brands were cheaper so I used them, too. Had 70k on it when I bought it, sold it with 110k and the lady is still driving it - had around 150k last I heard and still didn't use any oil.

So I guess any old oil will do just fine...

If you have a newer tractor or have just rebuilt your motor recently, try some Mobil synthetic oil. You will notice a difference in the performance of your tractor as well as much improved ability to start on cold days.

There is lots of ideas about engine oils. I was trying to help other people who wern't sure about this subject with my experance with oils. I'd like to take the time to thank everyone for their input on this subject. Hopfully we have helped alot of others out there, who are not sure about oils, grades, or product names of oil. which types of oils to use and not to use, in there equipment, so that they don't run into costly problems, if the stand at a shelf of oil, and go enie meni mini mo, and grabe the wrong stuff. Once again, thanks for all your input.

I think it is better said to old tractor buffs. try not to use car oil 10 w 30 in your tractor. Esp if you work the tractor. I use 15W40 any brand thats around when I get the itch.

Old tractors specified 30 wt oil. but I dont think 10w30 is the same thing. When your pumping up the plow and she gets good and hot. I dont think that 10w30 is doing what a strait 30 wt would do. 15w40 seems to perform much better when hot.

There's a lot of good oils out there, but I have a 1940 JD H that's had nothing but Quaker State 10W-40 in it since I overhauled it in 1974. I used it hard for 25 years, and restored it to show in 1999. The crank was within .0002" of what it was before, no measurable taper in the cylindes. Rod bearings showed .0004" of wear, well within new specs. Engine was as clean as new inside. Can't ask for more performance than that!!

Go down to the Deere dealership and they"ll tell you the same thing. At the local green parts counter, they have 3 mason jars containing samples of rotella, deere oil, and something else. Their...hehehe....line is, turn them puside down and wtach which one stays on the sides of the jar longer. what a crock! when asked who makes it? the answer is Shell and if they (shell) could market it (deere formulation) they would instead of rotella. I shake my head and walk out. Snake oil salesmen abound everywhere. That being said..... I run deere oil until my warranty expires....that way the creeps can"t scream oil failure and trust me...they will do anything to keep from paying for a new engine.

You can"t go wrong with rotella....or most any other branded oil. Even the off brands are bottled by major refineries.

I also use CIH oil, but in the past have also used JD and believe CAT branded oil is probably just as good. For our older tractors any of the modern diesel oils far surpass their requirements.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but dont forget the fact that they have an axe to grind and are only going to include data that will help in the sales of their oil. Go to the competition and ask why you should use their oil, and I'm sure they will make a good case as well.
