My battery is shot and I went to the local tractor store to purchase a new one. Book says it calls for a 3ET and thats whats in it but my battery has 6 cells and the stores have 3. I only have 1 battery in my tractor so it goes to assume it's a 12 volt. Anybody know what battery exactly fits so I can get my driveway cleaned of all this white stuff that dumped on iowa yesterday? Thanks and God Bless.

I'm changing everthing over to the group 31 batteries with the bolt top as they have very little corrossion around the cables and they are a by-product from the semis since they need changed every so often and never are all of them bad. Also the problem with the clamp ends getting distorted from over tightening is eliminated and just need a 9/16 wrench to change if greased don't seem to be an issue of unscrewing.

This from IH 756 parts catalog: Gasoline and LP gas engine tractors came from factory with one ( 1 ) 12 volt battery. Prestolite 3327X 12 volt or 3323X 12 volt. Illustration in parts catalog shows them to be the long and narrow battery. Photo in owner's manual of gasoline engine tractor shows one battery mounted on right side of tractor and it does not have a battery tray on the left side.

I did find a battery today. They make 2 different types of 3ET's, one 6 volt the other 12. Interstate battery 104.00. Pricey. Next time I buy one it will be a car battery. Thanks everyone for the replies. God Bless. Mike

NO they DO NOT make two types of 3ET's, one 6-Volt, and on 12-Volt. One type is a "3EH".

And, you REALLY go SCREWED paying that much for on!. Our local TBA place has them for about $56.00!

I have a 1456 and (2) 1206 IH's.I got tired of buying 6 volt batteries all the time and replaced them with (1) car 12 volt 1000 cranking amp battery. The tractors all started great and the batteries could be used elsewhere when the tractors werent in use.

I see this done quite often. Its not original but it gets the job done.

My 706 gas has just one long narrow 12 volt battery on the right hand side of the tractor. Six cell caps at roughly two volts each. I bought mine at Theisens Farm Store. They had two levels of the 12 volts - one with a lessor cranking amps and one with more. Also, they had the long narrow six volt batteries. Since the braided ground cable and insulated positive cable are so short it doesn't cost much to renew both of those items also. Goodluck.

It is a gas engine. What battery is needed for this? It has a 3ET with 6 places to put water but store only had a 3ET with 3??? I suppose that's for a 2-6 volt battery system but I'm still trying to find the proper one for my 1 battery system.

LOOONNNGGG 12-Volt battery = 3ET = 6 cells/fill plugs

LOOONNNGGG 6-Volt battery = 3EH = 3 cells/fill plugs

Hope THAT helps you in your search!

Tractor originally came with two batteries/12 volt system.

If it is a gasser, you can get away with one 12 volt battery.

However, if it is a diesel, I'd sure go with two 6s in series or two 12s in parallel.

mebbe so mebbe not. I had 2 6s in my Hydro, Always gave trouble when it got below zero. So I tried 2 12s, not any improvement. Well last summer I needed a battery for something else so I robbed one of them. This winter the tractor has started great with only one 12 volt. I'll never go back.

sounds like some really bad cables if 2 bats in parallel don't crank better than 1..

Allan, in your experience, which would be better in a slow cranking speed deisel Hydro like my 544? I currently have 2 6 volts in series, but that old gal just cranks sooo slow and I know that doesnt help the starting. I do hove the 00 cables and soldered post clamps. I have been thinking about tossing the 2 12's in parallel, but would it make a difference?

Dave, YES is sure does make a difference.. Batteries in paralell ADDDDD DD to each others cranking amp capacity (while voltage, of course, remains the same) i.e. if each can supply say 400 amps, then two in paralell can supply 800 amps to the starter

HOWEVER if wired in series (like two sixes in series) the amps capacity stays the same as one of the batteries. If two 400 amp supply capacity batteries are in series, the combined series amps capacity REMAINS AT ONLY 400 AMPS

Therefore if its a bunch of amps you need for a short but fasttttt tttt crank over, two batteries in paralell adds the amps each can supply for a paralell sum of twice the amps either could supply.....

Really shouldn't matter, should it? Have you checked out that starter?

Thing ought to whip over pretty darned good if the batteries are in good shape and you've got a good winter weight oil in it.

All things being equal, diesels need a good 250-275rpm of tail-twist to get 'em to pop.

I've got 'em both ways and can't tell a dozen eggs' worth of difference between the two set-ups. :>(

Had the starter rebuilt 2 years ago. The ol gal has always turned over slower then all heck. People always tell me its because it has to turn the hydro pump, but would think if ya got the juice and the right cables that thing should spin right over. She is even slow in the summer when it is 90 out.

I would check the condition of the batteries with a hydrometer and compare the cell readings. They should be around 1.260. If these check out ok, I would have the starter checked. Hal
