OT -computer software for virus protection

I have been using Norton SystemWorks for several years and I have to renew my subscription or find something else. I tried to find out how to use it on several computers with different operating systems (ME, XP home, XP pro) but could find nothing on their website and nobody but a guy from India that I couldn't understand on their help desk.

I'm looking for suggestions on alternate systems - inexpensive or free - to use on my computers (Yes, I know, six computers are overkill in my house but they were free and it's handy to have one in almost every room).

I await your recommendations. Thanks.

Sorry for the long post.

The latest versions of Norton (Symantec) products will only work on Windows XP & Vista.

Hmm, there's no such thing as anti-virus software for my Linux box. Could it be because it isn't needed?

I REALLY have to wonder where some of these guys go on the 'net... I use NO virus protection, and have little or no trouble. I DO use Firefox, though.

I have used Norton and always had problems - usually too slow and wants control of everything it seems. Switched to AVG free edition and it works great. I have it on three units now. Would not use anything else.
You should go to Ad-Ware and Spybot to make a complete pkg.

Good advice below. I used Norton for many years. When it worked, it was excellent. When it did not, I found it one of the biggest frustrations I ever worked with on the computer. I am using AVG free now and am pleased with it. My ISP also provides some program that helps.

I was a happy user of Norton for years. Not any more. It is so big and trys to take over the whole computer. I pulled it and all its junk off. Been very happy with AVG free version. It does upgrade every day or so but I shut off the automatic upgrade and do it myself when I think of it. Don't like automatic upgrades running every time I turn the computer on.

I use AVG Free. Free for personal use.

After I put my ex-boss out of business by coming home to farm, I no longer had to sell Norton Antivirus so I just installed AVG for anybody that asked to have their computer worked on.

The updates are daily and free. No tech support on the free version, but it catches just about everything Norton did, and scans (much) faster.

Don't even get me started on Norton. What genius thought it was a good idea to make the antivirus suite depend heavily on IE, the one program that's constantly being monkeyed-with by all sorts of nasty spyware and malware? If you had a pile of four mismatched tires that are bald and go flat regularly, would you put them on your vehicle you drive everyday? Of course not! So why did they? grr..

Oh, and... not to brag, but there's 4 PCs that run at least weekly here at my folks' house. At home I have just two - one for me in the house, and one for me out in the shop. That way I can do wireless anywhere on the farm. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I'm using AVG Free Edition, so far it's worked well they do have one that costs something not sure how much and not sure how it differs from the free.

I switched to Free AVG several years ago and solved a coupla problems. Just Google Free AVG and you can down load it. It will scan and update your computer daily if you set it up to do so. It checks and updates anyway. Our computer repair service put me on to it. Norton gave me problems with MS updates. AVG does not.

Use Norton Corporate.

Wow, you must keep busy making the constant upgrades on those six system application software packages.
