guys, i can't remember the year--believe late 70--but 6v-53 went to 6v-53T in some trucks--i was around a gmc 10 wheeler dump truck with that engine, & turbo pushin stock blower made a pretty neat package---paul

The easiest way to tell is stand back and look under the front. If there's an oil slick the size of the Exxon Valdez, it's likely a 318 Detroit. Can it get out of it's own way?

Easiest way to tell a 53 from a 71 is look at the valve cover hold down. Got a ring of bolts around the cover lip, it's a 53.

Got two "doorknobs through the top of the cover near each end, it's a 71 or 92 series.

Since it's in a truck I'd hazard a guess that it's either a 71 or 92. I'd be very doubtful if it's a 53.
I'd also assume that there is a data plate somewhere on the engine, but it's a long time since I looked closely at a jimmy...

Neighbor had a early 1970's cab over Chevy 10 wheeler years ago with a 6V-53 Detroit and ran dual straights. He lived 5 miles east and you could hear him leave the yard.He was headed to the elevator 5 miles to the SW of us and you could hear it for the entire 10 mile trip.

I gather you are referring to the 2 stroke Gimmy"s. the "53" is the designator for a 53 cu in cylinder and the 6 V ,means its a six cylinder in the V configuraion. The 6V71 is similar except 71 cu in per cylinder. There should be a data plate on the engine somewhere to denote which one you have. if you have a manual for the truck than there is probably a dseignator in the VIN # to designate the engine. If I had to guess, I"d say you had a 6V71 just because of the size of the truck.

Does the truck run? The 53 seris engin runs more R.P.M's than the 73 and has a higher-pitch noise than the 73's. Because of this they had the nickname bumble-bee. When you drive it you will understand what I am talking about. Armand

6V53 has 318 Cubic inches and 6V71 has 426 Cubic inches. Detroit identified their engines by the number and configuration of cylinders and the displacement for one cylinder... Gene

To the best of my knowledge they never made a 6V-71.If its a V6 its a 53 series. The 6-71's were inline.

Detroit made the 6-71 in inline and V block. Through the years I had both and 6V71 was rated 195hp@2100rpm and the in line 6-71 was rated 238hp@2100rpm.

look at the valve covers---53 series should have 4 bolts upper & lower edge, 71 series have 2,either hand wheels or bolt coming out of top of cover.
