i have an 89 gmc sierra 1/2ton and the steering wheel lately has about 3 inches of play up and down i heard theres a nut to tighten if true easiest way to fix problem

Nope not that simple.The tilt column bolts came loose(4).
I'd recommend taking it to a shop.A lock plate compressor, pivot pin remover,and #8 inverted torx socket will be tools needed.

I get $60 bucks to do it in my shop. ~brad

I have been through that before. You will need to pull the steering wheel dig in and there will be 3 star headed bolts. If you can remove them and locktite do it, them I wish I would have since 3 months later I had to tighten them again.
