This is a new one on me. We had a couple inches of snow last night, and a couple miles from my house a band of big balls of snow fell. And I mean big, some of them appear to be about the size of a five-gallon bucket. They looked like a roll of turf, like the snow stuck together as it was whirling around. I got a few pictures, maybe try posting tonight.

Sounds like snow rollers, we had a lot of them around here 2 or 3 winters ago.

Here's a site I found with pictures from Illinois.

Did they fall from the sky that way? some times when it is windy, the wind will blow the snow around til it gets into a ball. We used to call it snowman pooh. Haven't seen it for years though.

Not too unusual, here in the Pacific Northwest, to have the temperature right on the cusp of too warm, and the snow tends to aglomerate into clumps maybe half the size of your fist. But 5 gallon buckets? That would be interesting. Wonder if it is the snow equivalent of hail, where the size depends on how many times the updrafts throw it back up into the stratosphere? Would love to see pics. . .
