Any Words of Encouragement?

Okay you guys,

Saturday, I've gotta go fetch a darned tractor that is 130 miles away.

I've already told ya how I hate this chore. Absolutely and totally hate it.

Don't like doing the process; it makes me nervous and just plain wish I didn't have to do it, but gotta get 'er done.

Got a clunky old Ford pickup and a tired old trailer that I 'think' will do the job (it's got tires and lincense plates on it anyway). Gonna take 4 heavy log chains and maybe even some binders if I can find the darned things.

This is a job that is just suited better for other folks. :>(

Any advice? Should I carry a bottle of Jack? Or, should I just carry along the bottle jack? :>)

Allan

Already have 'em and that's what torques me off.

$600 for tires and another three bills for service. Bet they hit 'em with a grease gun and then gave me the lube job. :>(

Hey Allen, tomorrow at 5:30 AM we are leaving to pick up a 730 JD that is 600 miles down the road. 130 is a piece of cake. I think I do that many miles in my in sleep. Actually the 02 Dodge Cummins humming along keeps me awake.

Got your DOT number installed on that new Ford? Allso your health card, inspection stickers, log book Ect, Ect. Your crossing state lines so the law sees you as a commercial trucker ya know. If you stay off the federal roads and avoid the weigh stations you should be ok tho. Good luck.

Best Wishes for a Happy & Safe Trip!!

Just wait 'til summer and start a new tractor drive. Just take everything you can think of and a few you can't and don't worry. I once made a hitch that clamped on the axle of an elevator and hooked a long hopper silage blower on it and towed them both home 70 miles at 50 mph. Good luck. Lee

Hi Allen,Words of encouragment, I started hauling my 40 WC with my sons 99 P/Stroke from RC to Gillette Wyo, 140 miles , then with a 4X4 K10 w/305 engine/4spd. Next a 4X4 3504spd. Stepped up to a 3500 454 Turbo 400 dually. Now using a 01 2500 HD 8.1/Allison5spd. The 01 comes the closest to the P/Stroke but still is a little short on hill pulling. That P/Stroke of yours will handle it fine. I like to use 4 3/8 chains and 4 binders. Cross chain if possible. Should have under $125.00 invested. Then the D.O T. guys should just ignore you. Like others said ,good lights and brakes and you are good. Good luck. dan wc ne wyo

Last time I hauled an "H" home, I kept hearing a bang, bang, etc. Stopped & looked all around the rig, nothing loose that I could see. Took off again & same thing; bang, bang!
Almost home & the mirror just at the right angle & I noticed the flip over seat was lifting in the wind & bang, setting back down.
Next time I either haul it facing the other direction or tie the seat down!
Have a good trip.

Kinda like an olde rear ended uh er engined Corvair on ice...when it goes to whippin to the left turn left and then when it whips back to the right turn right. Of course when it whips left; a trailer turns the truck right so be sure to make that correction. And also don't let it outrun ya downhill.
You might also check satellite view for a flatter road.

I have brought a lot of tractor home on a trailer and I haul one around that weighs 6500# to about 20 pulls a year. If your trailer is the type with fenders make sure you take lots of blocks and planks along in case the wheels are to wide. You might need to run one wheel up on a fender. Chain it and use chain binders. Most states want you to use high tensile chain. Always think ahead and take more than you might need and you will still find that some thing will be missed. Make sure that your lights are working properly. Nothing will get you noticed by the law faster than a tail lamp out. Good Luck

I dont like to get very far from home in the winter but give me warm weather and I'll haul stuff from most anywhere in the sparsely populated plains states.

In Sept I hauled home a 1940's model 21 Massey SP combine 750 miles from north of Kimball,NE by myself.Hauing stuff thru NE and KS is fun because theres so little traffic.

Take both bottles with you!LOL

Allan, I know you are pulling our leg. heck...your twice as smart as most of us.
Carry a tool box, jacks, spare tires and extra tie downs.
I have hauled all over the states...and I hate chains.
Now...don't go to Sears and get cheap straps. Go to a truck stop and pay good money for a set of 4 4" straps. That way you can cinch it down and go for it.
Like they said...make sure you take a jack and some blocks in case you gotta move the wheels in and some tape to tie stuff down. I always tape the exhaust pipe and any other holes that might let water in.
I usally check to see if the seat will come off in the wind...if it will, I usally throw it in the truck.
Heck, why and I saying this...you know what to do.
Go for it.....

Well...I keep hearing that, but you know, Dad was a trucker pulling oversize loads all over the country. After he lost part of his face because of a chain breaking...he never used another chain or cable.
He got the big wide straps and that is all he ever used.
I have pulled tractors from all over the country and no one has ever said a word to me.
I trailered a JD 820D and a Super MTAD from Indiana to Texas just last Fall and even sat and drank a cup of coffee with a State Trooper in Kentucky as he looked at my junk, and he never said a word.
I guess if push come to shove I would hang a chain or two on one just to meet the requirements, but I will and continue to use straps. I see big rigs on the road all the time using straps and they must cross scales and do the inspection thing.
I even rented a car hauler trailer when I brought the old IH pickup back and it had straps and tire webs on it...not chains. Each to his own.

I always bring the bottle jack, jack stands, and a rolling floor jack, because I hate crawling under my truck or trailer to place the jack. I probably spend more time binding the load and preparing for the trip than I do driving!

Bought a 100 IH manure spreader on ebay. Drove 860 miles, got robed on the way, only to find that the 100 was actually a 200. Twice the size. Took a small trailer. Wife was with me and had lost thousands of dollars worth of her stuff in the robery. Would have like to see me in a casket at that time. The spreader was blocked by a junk car back in the weeds. The seller was not able to be there. (:^D (I was able to figure that one out) I got it on and the proof is below.

Looks familiar, drove 1000 km's (600 miles) to get to this one. Was blocked in by a dead car and the fellow storing wasn't home.

Turns out I got about half the contact patch from each tire onto the trailer stake pockets.

Maybe I'm just too dumb to worry, but I LOVE equipment hauling. See some new country, everything secured real well, the Cummins hummin' along in the right lane. . . Can't beat it! In fact, this fuel cost thing has really cut into my fun, 'cause I can't afford any of my road trips anymore. I'll tell you, if you lived close to me and I had a combine that needed fixin', I'd put you to work on it and I'd be off to fetch that M in a heartbeat!

That old Ford isn't going to give you any problems. Heck it will even pull that trailer without wheels or even if the trailer axles fall off. Just a note however, the faster you go the quicker you get there and back. Did you remember to pack some radiator stop leak?

I remember pulling a speedboat with a Lincoln to northern Michigan and decided to pull off the highway to get some gas. When I got out of the car at the gas station I noticed that the trailer was sitting all catawallered. Evidently I had been driving without a tire for several miles and the wheel was all worn down. I never even noticed anything wrong.

Just keep the pedal to the metal and don't look back.

I'm surprised that a spare tire hasn't been mentioned yet. If not a spare then a can of fix-a-flat and a 12v air compressor / airtank.

You might also want to do some basic things like fluid checks before leaving each end of the trip. I have 202k miles on my truck now and I find that it consumes more oil than normal when its towing.

Can't be messin' around either. Gotta get back here because of my workload that piles up when I'm gone. On top of that, I really gotta haul the mail.

Seeing a tractor following me home in my rear view mirror is one of my favorite sights!

After wrestling whatever old fence row junker onto my trailer, my little ritual is to stop in at the nearest convenience store - pick up a 44 oz soda, then check the tires and chains one last time and head home a happy man - checking the mirror about every 200 feet!

I didn't tell ya the bad part.

I'm going up to the edge of the black hills.

I've been on that road and there are places up there that are really some rough terrian.

Stretches of road where you can't see more than 7 or 8 miles ahead. Nothing at all like I'm used to.

This trip just has me worried sick. :>)

I may not be bright enough to actually hate hauling equipment around. But each time I do it, I'm a little more nervous than I was the previous trip.

Take your time loading and securing the tractor, check everything twice, and have a safe trip back home.

Good luck! We're all looking forward to seeing your latest purchase.

Bottlejack, definitely. Come-a-long. Portable compressor. Bring along any tool you can muster. Bring some Pepto-Bismol if you are gonna stop off at any resturaunts. Sounds like fun, wish I was closer!

Hope it goes well,

Aaron

Hey Allen,
Wish I was closer to you. I'd go for you! I love those trips especially if a nice old Farmall tractor follows me home. Can't say the better half does though! When I go alone, I go there as fast as I can and get home as fast as I can with minimum stops. When I take "the old girl", we don't drive more than 8 hours, then it is a motel, nice dinner with some wine or a few brown bottles. Yeah, I enjoy those trips. Take your time and sit back and try to enjoy it. Good luck!

Leave the bottle of Jack at home, its a lot easier to talk your way out of the ticket for overload/tail light failure/impeding traffic/etc.. when you don't smell like kerosine mixed with charcoal.

However pulling the bottle of Old Charter out at the scene of the purchase always helped my dad work out an extra discount or price reduction on another piece of equipment he had his eye on.

All I can add is don't forget to hook the safety chains on the trailer hitch and remember to block the back of the trailer before you load so your not trailer surfing.

Oh and good luck and a safe trip.

Guess you could always "Road Her Home". Let's see, 130 miles divided by, say, 18 mph, makes it a 7 1/2 hour trip...not bad if not too cold!! Cmore

i always get nervous moving a tractor too. seems like everything goes wrong. i sure would take the bottle jack, some wood blocks, roll of bailing wire (ya never know) also some wrenches in case you need to slide the rear wheels in to fit the trailer. (learned that the hard way) maybe some nylon rachet tie straps, tractor hood will prolly be floppy!! 4 way lug wrench, spare tire, can of fix a flat, can of starting fluid, empty gas can and gallon jug of water. ham sammich, bag of chips, thermos of coffee, couple rags too!!!!!

Oh Man! You're kiddin'!

I just don't think it's worth it.

Think I'm gonna call and see if I can back clear out of this silly hair-brained idea.

Working on old shelled out combines is a heck of a lot easier. :>)

Come on, Allan! Just get that trailer hooked up and "Git'er done"! You'll be back before you know it! I've hauled tractors and equipment out of Ks, Ne, Mo, In, Oh, Il, Ar, SD, Ia, Mn, Wi, Mi, Ky, Ok, and probably a couple more states I can't recall right now. I use a antique 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins and a old flatbed trailer with IL. Farm plates. Never had a bit of trouble, except for a couple flat tires. Take a good jack and some wood blocks and at least 1 good spare for both the truck and trailer. Almost always, I travel by myself. Some times I haul 2 or 3 tractors at a time, if thay aren't too big. Shoot, one time I even hauled an old F2 Allis Chalmers combine engine from Southern Indiana to Central Iowa! LOL! Have a good trip!

the planning part for me is the worst, i think i always do overkill. drives my wife nutz. once the tractor is on the trailer, all tied down, and you move the first 10 feet, all the worry seems to go away. then you get the big grin on yer face!!!! woo hoo!!! another new to me tractor. i like traveling the back ways. meet a lot of nice people that way, stopping for fuel and eats, seems like an old tractor on a trailer really draws out people to chat!!!!!

Allan, noticed you chiming in over on the Ford board this morning. Did you find something blue to buy?

Have a safe trip, I know your equipment is up to the task or you would purchase something that is.

Equipment isn't the biggest problem. It's me.

I don't do well around asphalt, traffic and people. Some of these roads are paved and there are folks actually driving, coming at ya over in the other lane.

Pretty shaky stuff.

I do okay movin' about out in the cow manure in the corrals tho. :>(

If that new ford pickup is clunky, then why did you buy it. You have put pictures of your trailer on here and it sure didnt look all that bad. Encouragement? You were smart enough to buy it, and should have thought about this before you bought it. I understand you 110 per cent.

Id take both Jacks.-Be prepared-
As far as encouragement, think of it this way.
You bought the tractor because you saw something you wanted.
I guess think of the trip as a necessary evil. This is a one time gig.You may own the tractor the rest of your life.(If you sell it add the pain of the trip to the asking price)
Picking it up may be a small price to pay if you enjoy it.

You better stick with the bottle jack !

Be careful and have fun. Can't wait to see the pics of the new M @ your ranch.
