In about 1976 or 1977, when I was living in Barney, ND, I had occasion to see an odd Versatile (I think) tractor on and implement lot near the Wil-rich plant. This tractor was set up in tri-cycle arrangement. Six tires (24.5X32) and 3 903 Cummins engines. My first thought was how do you change a flat on the two inner rear tires? I remember that a hydraulic cylinder was attached to the hitch pin. The cab was mounted on the front engine/drive train. I really regret not taking a picture at the time. Some one other than me has to remember this rig!!

I just found it!!!!! !!! See>Link

This>Link is the rig that I saw. I do not recall the yellow color scheme but now remember that the fenders were made of 1" plate steel. It was not very long so I bet it was a bear to steer. They should have had the steering throttle sensitive so that the "outside" engine revved a little higher than the inside one when turning. I think that I need to try to build a 1/64 replica. Gotta go look for more pictures. Thanks for the Steiger lead, Gene.
Regards,
Doug

How about Verstile's "Big Roy"? (Similar to your description, but ONE KT-1150 engine, and FOUR axles...)

Could this have been a Steiger? Steiger built a ptototype tractor as you describe. I saw it exhibited at Farmfest '76 in Lake Crystal, Minn. They would not demonstrate it there for fear that It might break down in front of all the spectators... Gene

Gene,
It could have been a Steiger. For some reason Versatile stuck in my head. I even went as far to look up the current dealership at the site and call them (Richland Implement). They didn't have anyone to talk to that was there 30 years ago. As I recall it was an IH dealership so Steiger makes sense. I've looked at a Steiger web-site but it makes NO MENTION of such a critter. Where do you think that we could find a picture? I'm going to try and find a Steiger "historian". I am really glad to hear that someone else has seen it. I was beginning to think that I was nuts but I couldn't bear having my wife be right !! (again) Thanks.
