OT: Starting a new job soon...

I had a job interveiw today at a different machine shop today and was offered a job on the spot. Decided to take it, so now in 2 weeks after I give my notice on Wed. I start a new job.

One of those things where I wasn't extremely happy at work because I had to constantly deal with junk programs and hair brained set-ups on a daily basis, plus playing scape goat for the problems that 1st shift had while working on a job I started the night before.

Getting another .50/hr over what I'm earning now, plus another $1.50 shift premium once I go back to 2nd shift, and the over all benefits are better, including disability ins. After the 90 day probationary period it sounds like I'll get another $.50/hr too....

Wish me luck!

I have been in the same job for about 16 years (CNC machinist) and with the same company for 21.
My opinion is:

1.Find a job you enjoy.
2. Work with people you like
3. For a company you respect and will care about you and 4. Money last.

Life is to short to be unhappy where you work. You will not come home a happy person and it will wear on you and your family.

A mistake I have made, is believing that everyone was as smart as I am or more talented. It wasn't true, and I needed to allow other people to have more room to make mistakes.
I am now getting along with others better.

Good Luck
SDE

You picked a good profession. Learn as much as you can and be reasonable when working with Engineers/management. My dad owns a machine shop and GOOD/VERY GOOD CNC guys are hard to come by. It amazing the people that call themselves "machinists".

Isn't it? I know I'm far from being the best guy out there, but I do take pride in my work. Seems like they'll hire just about anyone at the shop I'm leaving, and most don't stick around.

So far I've been doing it for about 5 1/2 years, got my 2 yr. Associates Degree last spring and have been listening to the older guys that I work with. Lots of valuable information that'll be be long forgotten otherwise.

What type of machining do you do? All prototype? or semi-production stuff. A good machinist should make a minimum of $16/hour. I have been a toolmaker/machinist for several years and most guys in the trade make between $16-25/hour. Only in the big-profitable shops do guys make $30/hour and up. I know of only 2 guys that made that kind of money, both are now in their early 60's.

Sounds like you made a good decision. You seem like a pretty smart guy with a good dose of ambition to go with it. However, I don't think scape goating is unique to your old job/shop. It's always easier to blame someone else, and anytime a shop runs more than one shift, the blaming just gets easier.

Your new employer also made a good decision in hiring you.

You will do well.

I know every shop has their problems and I know I'll never find that perfect shop, but I know that the BS I had to deal with on a daily basis just wasn't right. I've heard of problems with the new shop I'm starting at on the 14th, but it was all from younger guys I went to schol with who I think were trying to find the best shop that doesn't have any problems.

They have a slightly higher security than most, so it makes lots of guys feel uncomfortable and paranoid. I'm looking forward to working at a shop that is more on the cutting edge of technology and uses newer machines, vs. one that uses machines older than me and expects them to hold .0002 tolerances and repeat all day long. They may hit it once in a while, but it for sure ain't gonna repeat every time with an old worn out machine.

Good Luck, Donovan, wishing you the best. It is very hard to change jobs, at least for me. Sounds like you are bettering yourself and the present work situation isn't the best, so it should work out OK. I heard this a long time ago; If you find a job that you love, you will never have to work another day in your life. Think about it a little, and it will sink in. It's easier to change when you are younger and single, than when you are older and have family responsibilities. Put the extra $$ you make into your retirement fund, you won't miss it. Chris

Good Luck. Maybe that extra money could go for another Oliver or Massey. Hope this works out.
