Sorry for the really dumb IH question, but I was only 8 or 10 years old when my dad traded off his M and I just cannot remember.

Seems to me that didn't some of 'em have the pre-cleaner jar? I see pictures of the old sisters both ways; with and without.

Anyone know how this played out back then?

Thanks,

Allan

The Pre-Cleaner was a option for tractors that were operated in extrememly dirty or dusty conditions. The Pre-cleaner trapped lots of the dirt and dust and filled that jar. I see a lot of people use the precleaner jar to hold a couple small toy JD tractors, but I would not want to do that.

As a fellow Nebraskan I agree on the dust item! The Donaldson (glass jar type) were an option and they do bring good money if in good shape with the jar. Think original ones had the Ball jars but there are Kerr jars that fit also!! What part of nebr are you from,,,,, ne part her

Allan if you really are so busy with all these projects how do you manage to keep a shop as clean as whats in the picture? You could at least let the rest of us in on your clean shop secrets.

Is this not your shop?

Where is the gleaner, have that motor put in yet?

LA in WI, Very good infomation.I didn't see the toolbox as an option. My H has one with the factory indention for the decal. Allan pay attention to La in Wi and Rustyfarmall. They got it right. But I think your front tires oughta GO.

Dandy Don, I don"t see any mention on my order pages for those toolboxes you describe. I have an aftermarket one on my H.
I"m not real sure they were an option from the factory...maybe the dealers ordered them from another supplier at the time before the tractor was delivered to the customer?

Further options for the H (this might be more info than anyone wants):

List prices

Tires, Rear, Standard, 11X38, 4 Ply Tires, Front,Standard, 5.50X16, 4 Ply

For 10X38, 4 Ply Rear, deduct $26.00
For 10X38, 6 Ply Rear, deduct $5.00
For 11X38, 6 Ply Rear, add $25.00
For 12X38, 6 Ply Rear, add $51.00
For 16.5X16 6 Ply Single Front and wheel, No Charge
For 6.00X16 4 Ply Front. add $3.50

Axle, Wide Tread, 100", rear, $12.50
Kerosene Burn Attach.(includes shutters) $20.00
Radiator Shutter, for Gas Engine $8.00
Pistons, High Altitude $4.75

Regarding rear tires; In those years all I ever saw on H Farmalls were 10" rears. Never saw 12".
As I said, "money was tight in those yrs", so I"m betting that deduction of $26.00 for 10" was popular, figuring that size was "good enough". Later in the "50s as the original tires wore out, farmers were proud to install "big 11" tires. All the M tractors had 11" from the factory in those days, as I recall.

Whew. Time for a cup of coffee. LA in WI.

Air cleaner options; other options in reply to Allan In NE, 12-20-2007 02:18:58
Allan,

According to the dealer price list of 1950, the "Collecter-Precleaner", #59095 D, listed at $5.75 and net price was $4.60. Money was pretty tight in the late 40s and early 50s so very few farmers opted for what they considered to be frills. These prices are for an H, assume about the same for an M.

(Hope the columns below stay in order instead of running all together.)

Other options for H and HV (List):

Belt pulley $45.50
Swinging drawbar 5.25 Yep,was option
Elec start & 3 lights 68.50 2 front, 1 rear
Fenders, pair 15.75
7 MPH 4th gear 3.75
Lift-All 56.00
Muffler 3.75
PTO 30.25
Seat, deluxe upholstered (Foam rubber) 4.00
Seat, hydraulic type (Foam rubber) 20.00
Wheel weights, pr, rear 28.25
Wheel weights, pr, front 7.75

Base Tractor with 11 x 38" 4 ply rears $1514.50

Hmmmm, Interesting.

I can remember my dad trading a team of draft horses on the M sometime along in there; either '50 or '51.

Then, later bought the H in '52 for $1800 as I recall. Exactly what I had to pay for my restored H only four years ago. :>)

Can also remember he got a brand spankin' new car and a used '53 pickup in 1956 (actually, had to wait until late '56 because of the steel strike).

$2400 for the pair. Just about what my monthly phone bill is today :>(

new cars and tractors in the '50s in reply to Allan In NE, 12-20-2007 06:40:58
I was born in "37, so I remember the years starting right after the war. My dad was on the waiting list for a new Chevy at the local garage in Iowa. His name got to the top but he would always defer to the next guy because dad figured his old car was still pretty good ("36 Olds), and this drove me nuts because I wanted to ride in a new car. Then the economy really picked up in "52 and "53 so in "54 and "55 cars started the big changeover every year, with more chrome and power. Same thing happened with tractors...that"s why the models stayed the same for so long because factory owners knew for the customer it was "take it or leave it". It was a real big deal when a farmer bought a new car or tractor...he was considered rich! Dad thought they were foolish. Turned out he was right about his "36 Olds being better than those "47 -"52 Chevys.

You bet!

Do you remember when the salemen would come out to the farm to sell their cars, tractors, pickups and machinery?

They all stopped that about 1970 or so.

Always made me mad that they didn't have the "consideration" any more. :>)

Local Allis dealer here would fly parts and a mechanic right out to the field. Those were the days.

If ya can, what did you end up giving for it? I seen the original post about it being for sale. I think them tires look just fine on it. How many guys are running around with traction tires on non-RWA combines.

It was an option, most people would use them so they wouldn"t suck green tractors into the engine. They didn"t come with snow tires on the front wheels. I enjoy reading about all your adventures and would like to meet you someday. Also glad to see Nebraska Cowman back.

The air cleaners were manufactured by Donaldson. IH bought them from Donaldson. The cap in your picture was the standard issue, and the glass jar style was the optional pre-cleaner that was needed if operating in dusty conditions. The glass jar pre-cleaner was available in one form or another for just about every color or make of tractor out there, but it was an option. The glass jar style was later replaced by the style that used the plastic bowl, which was pretty much standard equipment on all tractors up until just a few years ago.

The glass jar precleaners were an accessory from IH, like getting dual aerials on your 1962 chevy.

Thanks

Allen, they were available as a factory option. I have a 48 M with the jar, and a 50 without. Same as my C's the 49 has one the 53 does not. My 44 H also has an original jar type cleaner. My book shows it as optional equipment on all letter series tractors.
