Just saw on yahoo where they are recalling over a million "camshaft position sensors" on the 7.3L diesel, 1997-2003. For all that have already been replaced at owner"s expense...?

MF#1,

My experience with recalls (GM, anyway) is that they will reimburse you for the repair, if you've done it already. Save your receipts!

Its a rediculous recall. I have already had one of the new ones fail, 300 miles or so on it. I dont think the problem was ever the cps to start with, just these yuppies out there intheir Excusions who dont know how to drive without power steering. I have had 2 old ones fail in my truck while I was driving it, I was perfectly able to stop my truck both times.

What about the 1995 and 1996 model years? They also have had the same problems with the camshaft position sensors. I will have to look into this as I still have my '96 and have put a couple of sensors into it so far. Would be nice to get reimbursed for the ones I paid for.

On mine, it would be going down the road and die, coast a little, restart, then go a little and die. Then it quit completely. Then in 15 minutes it restarted, run for about 5 miles, full speed, got to where I was going, dead, again, let it cool for about 15 minutes, started, run for about 5 minutes, then that was all. Called tow truck, off to Ford dealership. Said the CPS was shot, luckily was still under warranty and Ford paid for the tow. I think this is a little late as most TRUCKS have had them replaced, now the Excursions, and such that are soccer mom and yuppie mobiles, may not have enough miles yet.

When the sensor goes it causes the engine to die. The sensor provides the PCM with the timimg for the injectors to fire. Most of the time the sensor just dies and thats the end of it. But I've had a couple where they work intermittenly. Had one once where the truck would run but I couldn't go faster then 10 mph or it would die. At least I was able to limp back home that time. Usually they just leave you stranded on the side of the road.
