I recently just purchased a Belarus model 250 AS.2 cyl diesel,my question is why does it have 2-6volt batteries, would one 12 volt not do the job on this tractor ?

By all means go with one BIG 12 v battery, and get big cables.
We never bothered keeping batteries in our 520A years ago because we didn't see the point. There was alwyas a Ford and a chain availale to start the red pig anyway.
The guys I know that still run those tractors have moved the battery box up beside the starter and stick an 8D in there. That cured the starting problems that the 520's had at least... I'm still a firm beliver that the best cure for old red is a stick of TNT though.

I had a older model belarus 250 years ago. When the batteries went bad I replaced the 2-6v batteries with 1-12v battery. I had problems getting it to crank after that.
Since I had already bought the 12v battery and did not want to waste the money I resorted to pulling the compression release lever and let the motor start spinning; then pushing the lever in for the motor to crank.

That was back when I was young and dumb; but hey it worked.

"I had a older model belarus 250 years ago." Didn't think you had been around that long, John.

2-6V batteries have a lot more cranking power than most 12V batteries. Basically from a lot more plate area in the batteries themselves. A lot of early 12V tractors used that same idea. A single 12V would do the same job, but if the tractor is stubborn to start the extra cranking power will be helpful.

I have an AS250 also, Mack used to use 6 volt batteries in pairs wired in series because the cells are larger and discharge slower than 1 standard 12 volt would. I think you will like your 250 they are kinda funky but built like a tank and really good on fuel. Good luck T.J.
