I'm considering a Howse moldboard plow - MPH116, single bottom, 16" - for working up several acres for a food plot. This is a hobby for me, so keeping expenses down is a big priority (especially with the missus!!). I can get this at Northern Tool in Lynchburg, VA for $330 (if I have it shipped to the store, I don't pay freight on it). I'd be pulling it with my JD 1020 gas.

Does anybody have experience with this manufacturer? The price is appealing, but I'd hate to buy a piece of junk and wind up wasting my money. Thanks for any light that you can shed on this for me.

I agree that a disc will do you better than a plow for a food plot. We have many dairy farmers that plant hundreds of acres of rye grass every year and not one of them ownes a plow. It is all done with a disc and harrow. For a small area you can get by without the harrow by using a piece of fence with some logs tied on top for weight.

Now as far as how good are Howse implements??? I own a Howse 6' box; middle buster; and dirt scoop. I would not consider any of them profesional tools but for the weekend worrier they are priced in my range and hold up well. All are about 4 years old now and I have had no problems using them with a 40hp tractor.

A disk is ideal for working a food plot. Go over it two or three times if needed, you don't really want or need to plow it's just extra work. I would look for a used disk or ask a friend to borrow. I only plant my food plot once a year about the third week in August. Drag it with a piece of fence to smooth and once or twice lightly after broadcasting fertilizer. Broadcast seed drag again. Pray for rain. Works well for me every year. That's about all I have to say about that.

a 16 will do a lot better job the 2-12s as far as turning things over and for a weekend farmer the howse will do just fine

Neighbor has a 2 bottom 12" plow near Charlottesville I believe he said he'd take $250.
As far as Howse equipment the only I have seen is made pretty lightweight
