How big a disc?

I have an opportunity to buy a nice older Ford 8' disc for a decent price, needs paint and a few new bolts. Owner says he is not able to pick it up all the way with his Massey Harris 50, he thinks it weighs close to 1000 lbs. I have a David Brown 880e, 42 horse diesel, which should lift 2,600 lbs. I know a 6 foot disc is just too small for it as it would not even cover the wheel spread. Should I be able to pull this without problems?

The lift capacity is usually measured at the ball ends and a disc sticks out quite a bit further. You should be able to lift it but might need some front end weights to keep enough weight on the front wheels for steering with the disc lifted.

Sounds like you've answered your own question. A 6-foot disk is too small by your own statement, and your tractor should lift the bigger disk by your own statement--And you've got a line on what you seem to think is a good deal. Plunge ahead!
