Hot Running Waukesha

I am running a Waukesha 6BK power unit on my sawmill and it tends to run hot even under a light load.

Any suggestions as to the cause?

The water pump seems to be in good condition. The radiator has been cleaned. The thermostat has been removed.

Could this be a timing problem? Possibly late?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Dan

You didn't say if this was a new (to you) setup or if the motor had been running normal and now it's heating, but check all the cheap things first, as RS suggests. Rad fins dirty, clogged with dust/sawdust? (shine light thru at night); hoses good inside? belt turning fan? if new setup, and has no fan shroud, does it look like it had one? Rad cleaned how (remove and rod out? cleaner in water?). Can you see inside rad with cap off to see if circulation coming in from water pump? Some engines need thermostat to run normally (yes, some do). Any discoloration in water/oil as evidence of headgasket leak of comb gases into water? Is engine in stream of already hot air from other machinery/exhaust? Let us know about the above so we can make better guesses. I think I have a 6BK manual; I'll try to find it to see what it says about thermostat. Good luck.

I have had this setup a while. If working it extremely hard in the past, it would heat. That would mean sawing white oak. It seems though lately this has intensified.

Radiater - removed pressure washed and boiled at radiater shop a few years back and it still looks clean for light shining.

While running, you can see circulation in the radiater. I have not seen any discoloration from a headgasket leak.

I will try out a thermostat, that is a cheep place to start.

Put a new thermostat in and try it..Just maybe the coolant isn't spending enough time in the radiator to cool it properly..Try a 175 degree thermostat..Gas engine?? Maybe the points are closed up a little..That will retard the timing some..Are the cores in the radiator visible??Maybe you got some internal build-up of calcium or plaque..[ what ever you want to call it]..
